Hello.... and asking for advice in one go
« on: 24 January 2011, 21:47 »
Hi, I'm James and X4MGS’s son (Ken)
I've just got my second golf MK2 driver after my first one met an untimely death...
After running my 3dr tornado red mk2 driver (which is now in the stages of being broken for parts) for a year rot got the better of it and it died...
So we went looking for a driver that didn’t have rot and was a good runner mechanically. We eventually came across one in Brigg which was a 3dr in alpine white and barely and rust what so ever and completely original... and that’s what I’m driving at the minute...
Any whey my new one is so original that it even has the standard driver suspension which isn’t bad at all however after having GTI suspension my last car it’s not as fun to drive so I’m looking for a new set of springs... I have been looking at fitting some 16v ones, some eibach’s that go to 30mm or a set of APEX’s. I was hoping that you could share some of your wisdom and advice that will help to send me the right direction... sucking up over
Thanks in advance James

Nice to meet you James.

This subject had been covered many times, use the search function.

What is your budget?

Many will swear by the Koni/Eibach combination.  Me, I have the Boge Turbo kit from GSF and have no complaints. Particularly since it was only £125.   Well, to me it was anyway.

Coilovers tend to be rubish at the budget end, and you would need to spend some serious cash for a good set. And even then, they will be/may be a harsh ride.

So best stick to gas filled shocks and some lowering springs.  All will fit as the MK2 set-up is the same for all types.

Also look to get new/uprated G60 top mounts while you are at it.  And if you have the time, a new set of bushes all round.

Jonathan.

Hi James, welcome, pretty much as Jonathan has already said, though you'll find many differences of opinion, and rule of thumb these day seems to be price, If they're cheap, it's usually for a good reason! do some homework, and sift through the different brands till you find something that you feel happy and confident buying.. but post it up before you purchase, just for some sort of reation..

But, If I was you, I'd just tap up the old man to sort it out, ask him nicely and I'm sure he'll even fit them as well..

Thanks for the advice and welcomes....

I think as you say that a good set of coilovers would be too much to spend on a 1.6 driver and there are no guarantees that they'll be any good....

I think as you say that I’ll have to have my book smart head on in order to find the right set of springs at the right money...

however after having read what I have so far I think that it’s looking like eibach ones could be the ones and my shocks for the old car which were like new...

But ill just have to keep looking

Might be a daft question...

But if you want to keep costs down, why don't you transfer the suspension over from your old car?

I do like them but with them being only standard GTI springs they only lower by 10mm which does make a difference but what i reallywould like is to lowewr this one by 30mm so sadly they won't do what i want them to... plus with the shocks that i had it was great for cornering but the ride was really quite hard... where as my dads eibach ones wouldn't have been...

Is that what you run? If so are the springs ok to live with?

Get some AP coilovers, good quality and pretty decent price. Much better to be able to adjust the ride height otherwise you can end up spending cash and may still have a car that doesn't sit 'right'. If you can't afford coils at the moment just save up ;)

Sorry, I'll head back to ed38 now
