Gearbox codes compatible with AGG engined
« on: 24 January 2011, 16:28 »
Hi all, I have a 1996 8v GTi with an AGG engine and DFQ box, and i'm getting clicking whilst in neutral with the clutch disengaged, and an even louder clicking in 1st gear, but it stops when I depress the clutch. I'm also getting a VERY faint rumble only when i'm at speed and lift totally off the throttle, i'm assuming it'll be an expensive fix, or a replacement box.

Assuming I have to find a replacement, from my research my choices are AMC, CHE and DFQ (as it's the code box installed already!!), but i've been told I could use the 2Y from a Mk2 16v, can anyone give me any clues, Thanks for any responses.

yes 2y mk2 box fits right on, it has shorter more sportier ratios. you can also use 8v gti box but need to change the clutch friction disc to get it on there as the input shaft is samller

Cheers for that jonny, with the 2Y, is there any changes to things like the reverse light switch or Speedo drive with it having a different final drive ratio?

Sorry if these questions are a tad basic but only in the last week have I been trying to learn about all things gearboxes, before it was you move gear lever and witchcraft happens under the bonnet!!!

I'm in Sheffield, How urgently do you need a 5th gear?

I've found a 2Y box with a quoted mileage of 124,000 miles on ebay starting at £99.94, or by it now at £140 which is local, or an AMC which I believe may fit (please tell me if i'm wrong!!!) box in Coventry with a mileage of 103,500 miles at £84.99, i'm looking at the likes of Ebay as my budget won't stretch to a recon box.

Which would you recommend for general all round use?

just go for the best box you can find for a good price. personally i wouldnt pay more than 50 for a box i couldnt actually try out in a car, as you have no way of knowing if its actually any good or not. they are out there, just a case of keeping em peeled. if you have any decent scrapyards local the gtis are getting common in the scrapper, im sure some will take in cars that are drivable you can have a whiz round the yard in to make sure it dont crunch to 2nd and reverse gear isnt all clunky

im in no hurry, but you're miles away from me anyway!
