Just bought second Mk2.....voice your advice!

I must be crazy.....perhaps I am.....I already have a perfectly genuine G-Reg 8V 90-spec 3-door GTi which is great fun but need some TLC.

Just saw a "minty" J-reg 92 rolling shell at the weekend, which seems to have had the running gear rebuilt already, powdercoating etc etc.

Decided this might suit me better as a project (haven't told SWMBO i'm keeping the G-reg one too!).

Well this 92'er is a 16v, but has no engine or 'box.
No interior either, so a great "blank canvas".

I am asking the best way forward.....

Do I stick to originality or do I go for radical (ish)?


Any ideas guys?

OK, well i'm still looking for some advice........don't want to go V6 really.

Got some questions too.........

1) What brakes will fit straight onto front of stock Mk2 Gti hubs/carriers? (out of VAG parts bin preferably)
2) Is the Mk4 golf rear caliper conversion worth doing? will this use existing discs? do i need adapters for carriers? will cables still work?
3) Is there any advantage in going "wide track" front and rear? can this be done without going 5-stud hubs? Is this just VR6 Mk3 subframes? or is it wishbones too?
4) Non-OEM injection/management. Megasquirt or other?
5) What dashes will fit easiest?
6) Digifiz clocks - is this available with MPH units?

To the best of my knowladge:

1) You can put 280mm G60 type calipers and discs on it, if you have 16v hubs.
2) provides no power increase, its simply to avoid the seize potential of standard ones. uses same discs, think you need a set of conversion hoses tho. readily available.
3) think you are likely to end up with 5 stud, its gnerally done with mk3 or passat wishbones/driveshafts/subframe and rear beam.
4) Depends what engine you want to use, standard setup on a ABF is good apparently
5) duno
6) maybe

if you have a search in the mk2 section you'll be able to find a good bit of info on the above. Particularly on the use of widetrack which I dont know much about.

Good luck with it anyway, looks like a tidy start point!

1) 280mm are the biggest oem discs you can fit as long as you have 16v hubs
2) They are lighter as they are alloy, you will need conversion hoses to fit them which are around £20 but apart from that are a straight swop
3) Better stability, you can retain 4 stud as well
4) This would leave you with a more tailored setup but will cost more when it comes to having to be mapped
5) mk2 dash fits easiest!
6) KPH dashes only but you can have them recalibrated

I only went megasquirt as I was on k-jet, but I wouldnt just use abf managment, im probably going to see a better drive, more torque all round and maybe an extra 5-10bhp, bout £500 without the map. Doing my self hopefully and youll save quite a bit.

people may say what a waste of money, but people who buy £1000 exhaust setup
