 My first golf ran the standard wheels but I went for the remap etc
Now this golf I'm doing wheels coilies and maybe a remap later
Defo worth looking to upgrade brakes though if you're going to be remapping

Remap first, the power is worth the smile, the boat suspension is ghey, but deal-able with the new power. Coil-overs next so that power can be used round bends. Afterwards concentrate maybe on better disc/pad combo, new brake fluid with higher boiling points, get brake hoses replaced, which will give you nice braking power (quite a vast improvement over the stock setup).

And what you will end up is with what the mk4 should of been out the factory, a non de-tuned slow ass car, with biro-pen springs+suspension and sh!t stopping force. After that it will become an addiction

yeah think that is the way im going to go. do i need to get a dump valve sorted if i have a re map. if so are they still chavey noisey as i dont want that?

Sort your chassis out first,forget about the wheels and forget about the remap,get some coilies or lowering kit(don't get just springs),312's up front and your ready to move on to either power or wheels.

I made the mistake of running a mapped car on std suspension on my old mk4,handling was like a boat with too much power for the brakes,all wrong imo.

THIS IS THE BEST ADVICE!!!!!! TAKE IT.  (yes i used caps lock there for a reason)
The last thing i did was get a map. I had every thing eles in place to make the most of it. Brakes,saspention,exhust,wheels,intercooler, etc
The best thing to do is get rid of the origanel saspention as at speed the handaling is rubish. I remember a post on here late last year about some one asking about down force as the car on the motor way was dreadfall. The anser was to make the car a little lower and stiffer and then you can go faster, if you like. Its taken me 7 years to do all the things i want too, to mine and it just a case of saving up and doing the job properly.

and to be fair the handling really does need improving rather than needing more power 

mine stopped fine on the standard brakes, but i've always had 4 matching tyre.

Guys i dont toally agree with yas there... My mk4 run 225bhp and i thought the standard brakes with standard VW pads were fine and im not just saying that because i had 312mm brakes sitting in my garage ready to go on if need be.. they stopped me more than adequate from 135-140.. brake fade yer but get some uprated pads much better..

As for suspension you can get coilovers but uprated springs on uprated shocks is more than good enough and a lot of people on here run shocks and springs with great results.. coilovers are only usefull if you want to constantly raise and lower your car if your going to keep it at one height whats the point uprated shocks will me more than good enough..

I do understand that on standard suspension my mk4 was twitchy at high speeds but with no side wind ive had it to 140 without dying so they are fine to and extent..

Exhaust is a good buy i had standard cat in place but a milltek 4motion cat-back and it sounded very quiet but had a nice note to it and that also removed the mid box so less back pressure on the system..

Also a front mounted intercooler is only really necessary for stage2+ as i spoke to Nick at RTEch for ages about FMIC's on my one and he said the SMIC was fine even for stage2 its just not the best so thats worth an upgrade if going stage2 or above.. And if your going stage2 and above you will be uprated loads of bits and bobs anyways so might as well add the FMIC to the list..

Wheels and tyres is just personal preferance my standard montreal II's on decent tread done the work and gripped the road really well.. but some wider wheels would of been ideal..
