Just bought a MK3 GTI 8v
« on: 19 January 2011, 22:48 »
My fiancee has just bought herself a MK3 Golf GTI 8v 5 door on a P plate.  It's an interesting colour, kind of dark blue but a bit purple in some lights?  It is completly original with 2 owners from new. 112,000 with full VW stamped history.

I took it out earlier and was impressed. I have owned loads of MK2 GTI 8v's/16v's and a few MK3 16v's. This was the first time I have driven an 8v MK3.......I found the MK3 GTI 8v to have a nice torquey engine and is ideal for what my fiancee needs it for as she is a Nurse a works 5 miles miles away, so a good solid car with comfort and a bit of speed if need be. The handling, well if it was mine it would be upgraded in the department!  I am off for a few days so going to give it a full service using a good quality 10/40 oil, OE filters and some Bosch Super 4 plugs as I have always rated these, although I dont know if anyone else has any negative reports on using them on the MK3 8v?  Also give all the breather hoses a good blast clean!

Well I'm sure she will join up soon so another member

I've always used NGK plugs. The recommended ones for the 8v engine have 4 electrodes so they are the same as the bosch super 4s, but much cheaper.

For oil got direct to VW, their stuff is only about £15 for 5l.Oil filter, get VW one too, they have non return valves to stop oil draining from the head.

The 8v responds well to intake modifications, so a new panel filter or even better, a pipercross/K&N will give a nice increase, as well as putting a cold air intake and/or derestricting the airbox.

For suspension, you can buy some eibach springs and new boge shocks from GSF, should renew the touch of the car. Remember to put new top mounts all over.

Polybushes give a very nice feel, it completely changed the driving characteristics of mine, turn in was so much better. Polybushes are reasonably cheap too.

Thank you all

I will get a VW oil filter and oil today.

I have read up on a good few reviews and the 8v MK3 seems to give good fuel consumption?  I remember my 16v was ok on fuel though.

Will get some pics up later as soon as she has had a good wash

Mine returned around 38+mpg when driven carefully, and that's with a race spec camshaft!!! I'd get about 43mpg if driven at 70 on motorway.

Classic Len!  I wanted her to but she wanted economy and read the 8v was better so the 8v is now here!  I really liked my 16v and if driven with care I found it to be good on petrol, a lot better than my 205 GTI 1.9.

The colour is lovely.  If I get another MK3 it will be in this colour.......But a 16v one!!  I'm just wondering now if my Bullmastiff would fit in the boot of a MK3.......Will wait till Michele is watching the tv tonight then sneak my dog out and try hers
