I have heard that diesel engines have often worked out better on fuel consumption after a remap, but I seriously doubt anyone is seeing better mpg on a remapped ed30 over a standard ed 30.  Depends what you want of course if you are considering remaps fuel consumption should not really be a concern.

If you drove and ED30 with a remap and an ED30 without a remap at a normal pace sticking to the speed limit and not flooring it anywhere, the one with the remap would return better MPG as it achieves torque and power sooner meaning you need less throttle travel and you will return better MPG. Did you ever see the Topgear episode where they got an M3 to follow and Prius around a track and the M3 just kept us whilst the Prius hammered it around. The M3 got better MPG than the Prius, its a similar thing to that.

Obviously if you drove both cars in anger the remapped one would arrive at the destination first, and would also have returned worse MPG than the non remapped one.

Who buys an ED30 to drive around sensibly in? ;)

Just watched that video clip from top gear, good stuff.  .  Anyway to the OP, buy whichever model suits your budget you won't be disappointed with either.

There is no point buying the 30 model.  It has a terrible turbo lag, harsh suspension and often suffers from crash damage.
Car magazine only gave it 4 stars while giving the real GTI 5 stars.

Just buy a red 5 door GTI, superchip it, and you have the best car money can buy.

Thanks for all the help and advise.
I know you don't buy a GTI for fuel economy, but if a remap would help then that answered my question.Every little bit helps with the current fuel prices.
Will probably be the slowest ed30 when driven be me anyway as I take my aggression out on two wheels.
My missus on the other hand has a very heavy right foot.

My word what can we say??????

We have just been for a nice Sunday drive out looking at new houses and my other half remembered he had seen  an Ed30 parked up on the estate where we live, so me being me, went to ask the bloke his opinion etc etc on performance, handling and economy.  To our great surprise the very nice chap gave us the keys and told us to take it out for a spin and let him know what we thought! Strange we thought so I said we would just take it round the estate, again to our surprise he said to take it down the A38 ....... be rude not to we thought, so off we popped!!!

For me personally i think a little bit of wee came out !!!!! James on the other hand was much more of a gentleman and just let off slightly !!!

It was amazing - we will be having one!!

Thanks for your advice and hopefully very soon we will be able to compare pics

Hi

It was manual.

It was the guy's company car and he was really great about it,very trusting. We did leave the keys to our golf just so he had a little peace of mind but he didn't ask we insisted!!  Not many of these kind of people about now a days (but we do have very trusting faces).
My missus drove the car and we were well impressed with the car's acceleration in 3rd and 4th and the pick up in 6th.
Didn't really want to give the car too much but we didn't hang around either. (Missus got a little scared I think, but compared to the 1.9 TDI I can see why) bless her!
Although it was on a 08 plate it had done nearly 90k but you wouldn't have guessed with the ride, performance and overall condition .
The guy said he was coming up for a new car soon and this one would be released and offered for sale.

What do you guys reckon it would be worth and would it still be worth considering with this amount of miles. As they are a newish model I don't suppose any of us would really know the true extent of it's sale-ability and good for mileage but any views/comments and knowledge welcomed.  Its been serviced twice a year and had cam belt etc done.

Even our little girl Katie thinks its   (age 5)
