Golf Edition 30
« on: 19 January 2011, 19:36 »
Hi

Thanks for reading ........

We are James, Sally and our Daughter Katie (age 5) (JSK) we are trying to find out some info on a Golf GTI Edition 30.  We currently have a Golf 1.9 TDI SE which we/I love so much.  But we have decided that before we get past it to enjoy a GTI that we would give it a go.

Can anyone give us any info on the differences good and bad between the E30 and GTI models.  Is it worth paying a little more for the E30?
Also can you give any feedback with regard to performance and economy (if any) ha ha!! etc?

Any help before we commit to buy would be greatly appreciated as we are not loaded and want the best value for money!!!

If anyone has an E30 for sale please feel free to email us with details.

Thanks
JSK

Hello there and a very warm welcome to the forum! This place is filled with folks with great experience and information so you are in the right place!

The ED30 comes with some nice touches as standard over the GTI which you are probably aware of, heated seats which are tartan in the middle with leather side bolsters and red stitching. Obviously there is a little extra power, the BBS alloys and the rear bumper sprayed body colour. If i could have afforded one at the time i would have got one because they do seem like a great car.

However, i've got a standard 55 plate GTI manual that has done 66,000. I've owned it for 8 months and not a single thing has let me down yet. (touch wood) it is fabulous in every day situations, the power delivery is soooo smooth and the interior feels special thanks to wonderfully supportive seats and the sculptured/flat bottomed steering wheel. I'll be getting a company car in the next 12 months and i will be gutted to see the GTI go, its by far the best all rounder i've ever owned.

I average about 32mpg in summer with a really careful right foot, but its dropped to just under 30mpg in winter with letting the engine run on start up, unsticking myself from snow etc... On a quick B-road run you could average anything from low 20's up to 27-28mpg depending on how you drive.

I would have bought a DSG if i could afford one (i could only afford a bottom spec car, mine hasn't got any fancy extras) but its still brilliant.

If you do buy a DSG, i would suggest getting a warranty. I've heard horror stories. If the car is out of warranty and the mechatronic unit (gearbox brain if you like...) fails then VW will want to replace the whole gearbox. Upwards of £5k thank you very much... I've got a full platinum warranty with warranty direct for £300 per year and its well worth it for peace of mind in my opinion!

The car is brilliant, you will love the driving experience stepping up from a TDI for so many reasons! Good luck, i hope this helps!

My personal experience of the Ed 30 i bought in the summer has been excellent.

As you may or may not know, the Edition 30 has an extra 30bhp, from the larger k04 turbo charger, whereas the normal gti has a smaller k03. The engine differs in other ways, but i am unsure what exactly   ( the same engine is used in the Audi S3 and the Leon Cupra)

The edition 30 also has a larger front splitter, colour coded side skirts and a different rear bumper which is also the same colour as the car, instead of the disgracefull standard Gti rear bumper. Also it has the BBS pescara alloys   It makes a huge difference when you see them. It has alot more presence on the road.

Half leather, and half cloth heated seats come as standard in the Ed 30.

They are limited in production also, (allegedly only 2500 we're produced), so expect higher residules when it comes to resale. But of course, also higher purchasing prices.

On a motorway run I regularly see approx 34 mpg, when crusing at about 80 70 ;), but if you put my foot down you wont see much higher than 15mpg when you look at the trip computer when your home.

Performance wise, it'll give alot of cars a run for their money, (especially normal gti's   ), and if you went down the modifying route, a simple remap will see it in the region of 280-300bhp, whereas the normal gti will only see about 240bhp max.

The big service you have to look out for is at 40,000 miles or 4 years, and will cost about £600 - £800 if you have the DSG gearbox too. It includes the cambelt and water pump, all filters, and gearbox oil (if DSG), I think that is all. So i'd advise to look for one that has had it already done.

I apologise for the messy, unstructured reply. I've been writting it whilst making tea, buying parts and watching the footy.

Good luck with your choice. You DEFFINATELY won't regret an Ed30

Great info there. If you have the extra money the ED30 is worth the extra (this coming from a standard GTI owner).

I have also heard that if you have an ed30 remapped you get more power, makes sense.

Two of the guys I work with have had their 4x4 remapped and "they" say as well as a power gain they have greater fuel efficiency .

Call me old school but I'm of the theory that you don't get anything for nothing. Can anyone suggest they're correct with findings on a remapped GTI Edition 30.

Unless you drive flat out all the time, your fuel economy will improve with a remap. The theory behind this is that you can get up to speed quicker and often don't need to drop down a gear.

I have heard that diesel engines have often worked out better on fuel consumption after a remap, but I seriously doubt anyone is seeing better mpg on a remapped ed30 over a standard ed 30.  Depends what you want of course if you are considering remaps fuel consumption should not really be a concern.
