Door handle really stiff...

Having to get in my passenger side door and open the driver's side from the inside at the mo...it's getting really old really quickly lol. The handle from the outside moves all the way in with some real pressure applied, but it doesn't open. The handle inside the car is fine though, and opens no problem, though with the door open, looking at the little backwards "c" shaped latch that's on the side of the door (the bit that hooks onto the bar on the body of the car to keep it shut) seems to be really stiff to move by hand. Like I said, it's fine to open from inside, which is confusing.

take the external handle off and grease all the moving parts, put some grease on fingers inside the hole too. if that doesnt help take the lock block off and drown it in penatrating oil, then clean it up and re-grease.

tip: the wee lever where the internal handle hooks on can be wedged open by inserting a screwdriver thru the hole on the bottom of the block. you'll see what i mean when you come to pull the block away from the door.
pull it so the lever is extended then pop a screwdriver thru the hole in the bottom to wedge lever in position. this makes it much easier to refit the thing to the door pull rod when you come to bolt it back on

Sounds like some top drawer information, car's gonna get a little working on tomorrow. Changing a door, straightening another, sorting a handle, taking out the carpet to dry, and hopefully sourcing a leak not looking forward to seeing under the carpet :s

top tip: if you need to replace a handle, only buy genuine.

my passenger door is a sod to open from the outside there is a certain knack to it  i generally save my mates the hassle of standing there nearly ripping the handle off by opening from the inside! I do want to fit Audi 80 handles though

if you have gen handles 9 times out of 10 all they need is greasing. even brand new gen vag handles need greasing before they'll work properly!  if you take the handle off and find its a pattern one, just put it back on and done bother messing with it, generally nothing helps they're just crap. instead get down scappy and on ebay, hunt out gen vag handles, or buy new.

polo mk2/3 and golf mk1/2/3, scirocco and cabrio all use the same handles. prob a few others as well in vag range so look around. really early mk1 and passat etc are different though.

all the random old gen vag handles ive had from scrappy have been perfect though, they last forever,. its just they go stiff and people assume that they're broken, without actually trying to service them first. if you leave a stiff handle too long eventually it'll break, so do it asap. its only 2 screws so you have no excuse

also you can fit rear handles on the front simply by bashing out a pin and swappign the finger over, i.e. the bit that moves up and down when you press the trigger.  fit a remote central locking kit and delock, removes 1 way of a theif breaking in. not a massive deterant though as there are loads of other ways, but at least it looks nicer

part numbers:
191 837 207 - front left, without lock - deleted
191 837 208 - front right, without lock - 23.49+VAT
193 839 205 - rear left - 31.14+VAT
193 839 206 - rear right - 31.14+VAT

my local TPS had both fronts available (minus locks) for around £27 +vat each in october (iirc)

RJ you forgot to mention that pattern ones snap when theives try to break in, genuine ones almost survive
