new stereo into my mk2.... help please.
« on: 18 January 2011, 06:20 »
Ok so I’m setting up my new stereo system for my 92 mk2. Well when I went to hook everything up I found myself very confused. :undecided:
Here is the diagram I used from the stereo section on the homepage.
http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/VW-Wiring.pdf

So I understand the concept behind connecting the wires and what colors to connect to what colors. Speakers are no problem, so I need no help there. The problem I came up with is that the +12 Volt Ignition Wire, +12 Volt Battery Wire, and the Ground Wires all claim to have specific colors to the wires but I found that to be untrue, for example multiple "red wires with a white strip," same goes for the brown and brown/red.

my question comes down to is there a site with an exact picture diagram for my specific year and model of my vehicle, as upon further investigation I found the diagram above is just a "typical" diagram for my car. That and any helpful information you can throw my way would be greatly appreciated. This will be my first time changing a stereo of any kind so I can use all the help I can get, give everything I know is both minimal and learnt within the last day or so ahah.
Thanks for the answers prior to receiving them…

I have a 1992 monte green golf gl (gti)

ps. there is no stereo in there right now and to be honest i dont even know if i have the 12 volt or ground wires. so if you know how and dont mine giving me an explaination then... How would i go about completely replacing those wires???

If you're not sure on the colours get yourself a multimeter and test the wires with the ignition on and off

live is red, earth is brown and if there is an accessory live its red/brown. only the very late mk2s got it, since yours is a 92 then it probably has one. the accessory live is 'key in ignition' so live as soon as you pop the key in, the wire is pretty thin.

i get that red is live, brown is earth etc. problem im coming along with is
there are multiple brown wires..
there are multiple red wires...
there are multiple brown/red wires..
thing i want is a diagram showing what these wires connect to and how everything is organized.. if i can find where they start then it will make my job finding the wires a lot easier...

anyone got a diagram or pics from when they changed their "mk2" stereo?

Another car that Stevie Wonder has worked on by the sounds of it...

Just get a multi meter and check which live & earth works... Then wire the ignition live into the heated rear window switch that sits next to the stereo, so that it urns on and off with the ignition switch! Again check this with a multi meter... Dead simple!!

Im sure someone else will comfirm if im wrong, the black connector is the power one. The brown connector is for your speakers.

Just so your not fiddling with wires you dont need to. Hope this helps

thanks for the input. and yeah "stevie wonder" definately did a number on my car  :grin:haha:grin: it was once described to me as a "wiring mess!"

but ive cleaned up a lot of that. anyways. no window switches as my windows are not electronic. heard you could go through your cigarette outlet thing??

and i just went out and cleaned up a lot of the wiring and unless the wires (12v constant, 12v ignition and ground) are behind the spedometer cluster then im betting that they dont exist anymore back there.. ie some one has taken them out.

how would i go about putting in a new ground, 12v constant and 12v ignition wires altogether?
thanks and cheers

If staring from scratch you will have to tap into the back of the fuse box...

Have a read of RJ's Fusebox FAQ guide in the Mait & Info section... Should make it as clear as MUD!!!

I would still have a route around the back of the switches and speedo to see if you can find the orginal wiring!
