not sure what the standard thickness is - think its around 19mm - 22mm 

Get a rear ARB before you think about upgrading the front

Front wheel drives always benefit from the rear, on my corsa you could buy a cavalier rear arb drill two holes and bolt it straight on! Rear arb for £8. I miss those days

Yeah the wife drives the golf more than me, i just swap cars for a day or so and mod/feck about with it when i have it, most of the time she does'nt even notice what i've done.
It took her a week to notice i'd changed the interior bits from silver(r32) to carbon look wrap and sprayed the front grill black and i don't think she has ever noticed the mk5 rear wiper
