Mk3 GTI Full Conversion
« on: 17 January 2011, 19:56 »
Hi all, im just after a bit of technical advice if i may?
Th'engine is knackered on my missus 1994 gold 1.4 3 door and we have bought a vento fronted '97 GTI 5 door AGG as a donor . The GTI is in perfect running order with a genuine 100,143 miles and full history and i am doing the conversion this weekend.

The issues i have are as follows:

It has a sigma alarm connected to c/l on all doors, so what would i have to do to remove the electrics that go to the rear windows/locks without affecting the other electronics?

Also, im doing a full conversion so i am swapping all the abs unit and re-making all the brake pipes too so that everything is done properly. Is this going to involve full pedalbox swapping and what do i need to look out for?

Im a fully qualified mechanic but my electrics knowledge isnt the best!
Any help on these would be greatly appreciated as i want to make sure im doing it all right!!

I will be taking pictures/notes whilst doing the build so i will provide a full illustrated guide once its finished and running, in case anyone does want to try a similar thing in the future. The main issue i think is transforming from a 3 door to a 5 door.

Thanks guys (and gals), Mike

Everything is plug and play mate, just ignore all the people who say "just buy a GTI". If you want to do it then do it.

I converted my 3dr 1.4 to a TDI by swapping everything over.

Drop the engine, subframe, brakes, suspension down in one then swap. The engine loom is simple to swap from the fusebox.

No the gti is perfect with tax and mot! Plus the missus loves her golf and its a rare colour, never seen one like it!

I am going to drop the engine/box/subframe as well as swapping the rear axle.
My main concern is the electrics coming from a 5door to a 3door.
One thing i was thinking of is just tucking the rear door electrics/locks behind the 3doors rear quarter panels.

Everything will be swapped over including the fusebox, all looms and the dash.

Thanks, Mike

Never worth the bother to be honest.

Have you checked the insurance as insuring conversions can work out more expensive.

Seems a lot of work to keep the 1.4 when the GTI is the better car, yes it might be a rare colour but still only a 1.4.

Sorry but im baffled at then point of this when you say it's a decent solid car with tax and MOT!?!?...surely it's quicker and easier just to sell the 1.4 and spend the cash on the GTI?

If you have the time and skill I don't see what the issue is (although it's not something I would do myself, but I'm lazy/talentless/both)
