TDI 150 oil advice
« on: 22 February 2005, 21:54 »
Few questions about oil for the TDI 150bhp engine. Its my mums car and it says it runs on VW 505 01 oil, is this only from VW or does anyone know of anywhere to get it as it probably wont be cheap. If the oil lights just come on how much oil should i add in? and final question whats the difference between PD, non PD, Fixed and non fixed servicing as i was just wondering when i was looking for some?
Thanks for the help.

Castrol SLX is the stuff to go for its 0w30 and meets the vw spec for extended service (20k). You can buy it in halfords but its about ?35 a bottle. Other oils are available but they only meet the vw 505 00 spec, thus you won't get 20k for a service.

To be honest I change my oil every year regardless of mileage as I am a bit paranoid!

PD engines are Pump Duese, This means the engine runs at higher pressure than the Non PD variants. High pressure means smaller diesel droplet sizes and therefore better power. The PD system is very different to commonrail engines you get from other manufacturers but you tend to get the same results.

hope this helps

I was lead to believe that Pump Duse meant that the diesel is injected at much higher pressure so to improve its combustability, so its not the actual engine compression that is higher.

golfvr6 you are quite correct.

The compression ratio is the same but the difference is the air leaving the turbo is at a higher pressure than in a non PD (note all PD cars are turbos), thus when you compress it, the pressure in the combustion chamber is also higher.

In order to spray the fuel into the cylinder, the pressure of the diesel has to be higher than the pressure of the air within the cylinder which is why you can run sucha  high peak pressure in PD engine.

hope this helps

High boost turbo and high pressure injection, thats how those good bhp figures are obtained

Thanks for the replies guys, sad thing is i actually work for halfords but i did check SLX as i know its all the German cars but it was only 505 05 not 505 01 that i needed, but then that was longlife 1 and we had no longlife 2 in stock is so i couldnt check it. also the computer came up with it as one we dont sell  so i went to VW and got a 1litre a pound cheaper than the halfords slx 2 1 litre so who said the dealers always expensive.

Hi there, Just thought I might add that we at GSF sell the proper VW Quantum PD oil for ?23 per gallon + Vat. (10,000) Service. Personall won't use any other oil in mine as I prefer all genuine VW stuff.
