I've got an 8v. Tryed a 16v but found the 8v a more usable car. cheaper to insure aswell. uses less petrol. Big bonus

How is an 8v more useable ? :undecided:

yes, how is an 8v more usable and to save any money on fuel you would have to be doing a million miles a week at 3mph, 16v rocks

usablility... how is that measured?? you telling me i cant drive down the road in my 16v? lol

is an 8v better around town? so claim the 8 valvers.. since when is a cars performance and quality guaged upon its ability to do the school run and nip into tesco's?

yes 8vs _feel_ more nippy around town, purely because thats where the entire focus of their power lies.. ! 8vs = ok for quick stop starting around town and comfy crawling through traffic..

the 16v feels a lil slow around town purely because its not working hard to do it.. you find yourself wanting to go faster all the time

all the 'power' in an 8v disappears once u get onto a proper road. in town its a bit nippier than most other 'normal' cars, but thats where it stops.

the 16v __still__? outperforms it low down it just does it with ease and without all the huff and puff.. .. BUT the difference is it keeps going once u get onto an open road.. whereas the 8v fades..? there is the exact same difference in that situation between a 16v and a vr6..

stick them in a line and set them going..

under 30 mph < no difference.? (of course revs on the 16v and '6 will be significantly lower)

up to 50 mph < the 16v has an edge over ther 8v, and the '6 has the same over the 16v (about a car length or so between them all)

up to 70 mph < the 16v and '6 have left the 8v behind. the '6 is a few car lengths ahead of the 16v

up to 90 mph < the '6 is ahead of the 16v.. where did that 8v go?

and in the above.. a MK2 16v comes in between the mk3 16v and the '6.

performance wise the difference between the mk3 8v and the 16v is _double_ that of the one between the 16v and '6.

8v owners over estimate the performance of their cars and are forever trying it on. i play with them all the time, after all the talk here i make a point of it.

Can i just say having read overseer's comments which i've gotta say in part are valid - i have an R reg 2.0 8v, yes i have made a few modifications but basically my little old 8v kicks out 150bhp (tuned by RPE (rally car tuners) in Devon)), and unlike a standard 8v my car keeps pulling through the rev range all the way up to 6000rpm and above should i require it. It doesn't back off or fade like a standard 8v it keeps pulling - even from 80-110 it's very quick. At first i too looked at a few 16v's and to be honest I personally wasn't that impressed for a car that chucks out 150bhp, it felt lazy and you had to keep the revs up to have fun.  Granted i would have preferred a VR6 but in all honesty the chance of finding an unmolested one is pretty slim so i tried a few 8v's - spoke to golf owners and went with the concensus at the time and opted for a 8v. Don't get me wrong i'm not knocking the 16v's i think for cruising along a motorway and open roads their great, my point is if you find a good 8v and make a few mods it can be so much more fun, bags of torque and instantly responsive ( i speak of only my 8v).

I get on average 32+ mpg urban and anything up to 40mpg on A/B roads/motorways. having had a few 16v motors i've honestly got to say my little Dragon Green 8v Golf always brings a smile to my face...

unlike the drivers overseer claims "over estimate their performance" my 8v power isn't over estimated and i'm just thought i'd make a point of that.

basically try one of each see what suits your driving...

i'm off to get chipped...

Simon.

mk2 16v is miles better than any 8v, mk3 or mk2,?

i love ripping up mk3 16v's with their 150bhp,? im running a mk2 16v TSR engine, currently running 155bhp @ the wheels[/b

PLEASE NOTE @ THE WHEELS its 155 bhp, at the flywheel its around 184/185,?

My car has no problems pulling right from the line @ 1000rpm, and when the revs get to 3000 its alllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll go,

i can hit the rev limiter in 5th gear, (145mph @ 7200 rpm)?

I can absolutely leave mk2 8v's they die off at around 90mph they just dont have any balls, cammed up or not.

the mk3 is crap, its heavy, sloppy, and doesnt give anywhere near the feeling or acceleration or speed as a mk2 16v - unless ur in a VR6,

a VR6 gives u the feeling of being sat in a rapid mk2 16v but ur in a mk3 in a heated leather seat, and going a hell of a lot faster,? ?

what u really want is a MK2 VR6 conversion - bye bye subaru's and evo's bye bye anything with a turbo and less than 300bhp.

Also id like to point out that a 16v engine is more efficient than an 8v engine, so the 16v should be more economical than the 8v's

I agree with the above comments regarding the 8v.

I had a 260bhp Coupe and had to slow down before I lost my driving priviledges, so got the 8v.

Nice to drive, cheap to insure, good fuel consumption. Happy all round.
