Newby needs help...
« on: 14 January 2011, 18:10 »
Hi everyone,

I am the new owner of my first gti (a 1987 8 valver), which I purchased about a month ago. During the very cold weather, I noticed a "ticking" coming from behind the dash - the frequency of which was definitely linked to road speed - which dropped off as the car warmed up. I had this diagnosed as a speedo cable on its way out.

As the really cold weather gave way to milder temperatures , the ticking noise dropped off almost completely so that it could easily be mistaken for wind noise and only at the higher speeds (I guess that this probably explains why I did not pick it up in the test drive). I have just had a replacement speedo cable (ex Euro Car Parts) fitted by my local dealer, who were very friendly and helpful. However, the ticking noise, which was previously barely noticable (only really I knew it was there) is now DEAFENING.

I am taking it back in first thing tomorrow, but before I do, please can someone advise me. Have they not connected it up correctly perhaps? Any thoughts on my next steps would be most appreciated.

PS: I'm really sorry that my first post is a request for help.

Some pics (sorry that the car is a bit dirty - winter and black cars what can you do?)....

I would have expected them to have taken it out for a test drive to listen to the noise before they start fitting anything. I would defo get them to check the speedo again however what about your heater blower, are yoou sure it isnt coming from there??? Quiet a common problem fot the mk2's to make weird noises from the heaters, mines does when i turn it on to 1 but turn it up more and it stops.

Thanks very much guys,

I'm kind of hoping that I've found a solid car, it's certainly very original - though the downside of this is that I am already feeling the need to replace the radio cassette player with something a little more up to date . It has only had one owner from new and he was pretty diligent on the service side of things (it had a pretty big file of receipts).

Since taking on the car, I have had a few things done -

1) the alloy wheels needed an overhaul. Though not kerb damaged, they did show the effects of having been exposed to the salt and spray of its seaside location in the North West. Romax in Stockton did a nice job with the refurb, though I stopped short of having the interiors of the teardrops powdercoated in a different colour tone (I reckon gun metal would have looked bang on!) .

2) The rear passenger wheel arch had some fairly significant corrosion (I understand that this can be a bit of an achilles heel with the Mark 2s). Autospray in Darlington did a great job with a panel weld repair and respray of the affected area - I would fully recommend them if you are based nearby.

3) The rocker cover gasket was seeping a bit of oil, so this has been replaced.

I'm hoping that the speedo cable hiccup won't be a biggy - hopefully they just need to clip it on tightly and ram it full of grease. On the subject of test drives, it's now so noisy that you do indeed have to wonder whether they actually road tested their work . I can't understand how they could hand the car back without even an advisory. :undecided:

On the subject of the heater, I think that I may have discovered some of the strange noises that you are referring to Peej1981. Still, at least settings 1 and 2 are still working (well, most of the time ).

Thanks very much for your thoughts - I'll let you know how I get on.

Well we are stabbing in the dark until you get it back to the garage. I would suggest though that you ask them to take it foor a drive with yoou in the car so that at least you know that they have test drove it.
Does the speedo make any indication that it has a fault i.e sticky needle or jerky speed jumping????

The speedo itself was (and still is) pretty much ok, perhaps a little jerky at low speeds but nothing too noticeable.

The ticky noises were only really audible at higher sppeds before - and even then only bfore the car was properly warmed up. But now they kick in immediately and are very noticeable. I really hate it when you take a car in for some TLC and it comes back with far worse symptoms than when it went in!!

Oh well, let's see what tomorrow brings.

PS: this is a superb site. I am looking forward to being coverted to the Dub way of things

Why not try disconnecting the speedo cable, and taking it for a drive to see if that stops the noise ? There's a guide on here about how to remove the clocks, really helped me when i did mine...

Should take about 20 mins, and will at least confirm whether the noise is from the cable or something else...

That's a pretty neat move. I guess I'll be looking for these kinds of thoughts from the mechanic tomorrow.

A really long shot but here goes.

Ticking can also be a cracked exhaust manifold.

Thanks Wayne.

The noise is definitely related to road speed, not engine speed. Hopefully this would rule out a manifold crack, though I'm not sure.
