Well - another day another problem!

The car made horrible noises driving the 1 mile home for lunch earlier, and on the way back to work after it stopped.......

Now the thrust bearing has been gone for a long time now and it sometimes squeaks, that's still there.... but it's must more high pitched now. After the horrible knocking noise stopped, the car started to make the "whirring" noise cars make going backwards, except I was going forward..... then it intermitently makes a knocking noise.

Almost certainly something to do with the clutch or gear box I'm thinking??
It does not make this noise at idle, but when I change into a new gear moving..... so pulling away in first, into second, and then on and off.

P.S When do you draw the line and get rid of a car??? It needs lots now!!
1. Mid-section on the exhaust is blowing (£60 odd quid)
2. Clutch needs replacing due to thrust bearing (paid £75 odd for a clutch kit not yet fitted)
3. Leaking rear window, so that needs to be fixed and the back foot well dried up
4. Now this, which I think is the gear box on it's way out.......

No slipping gears though as far as I've noticed......although it has got hard to select gears, but not all the time!

It makes all manner of odd noises!

Going forwards, I go in to first and put my foot down, and it makes a really loud whirring noise like I'm in reverse... then all the other gears make that noise too when I floor it, but it's gutless as hell, and makes bad clonking noises if the revs get up too far. Could this be air starvation??

In reverse, it's very reluctant to go anywhere. Have to give it some revs, then it sounds like the alt belt is slipping or something... I actually thought it was going to go bang reversing back into my parking space the noise was so bad.

I'm thinking,
1) Gear box is on it's way out.... something is wrong with reverse gear which means it's making the stupid whirring all the time going forward, and reversing it's seizing up and making a belt slip? Fear is its the gear box?
2) It's just the air intake, would explain the noise if air is escaping somewhere, and the sluggishness when I accelerate.

At 5pm I've got to drive it the 1 mile home, and the way it is at the moment, I don't trust it not to just give up totally.

Apparently gear box oil needs doing. Make sense?
Couple of questions.
1. will it hurt driving 1 mile to work and 1 mile back tomorow?
2. how do you actually change gear box oil?

reverse makeing the belt slip, what belt is that

That's what it sounds like, high pitch squeak from the front end. f*cked if I know.
On the point of taking out a loan and getting rid of it tbh.

Seriously? Get some freaking oil in the box before you even think about moving it. If you think its dry don't risk it, its not nice when it goes BANG.

If it is noisy and the level low then top it up asap.

However it might be worth dropping the remains of the old oil out and seeing if it has any metal in it etc.

Thinks the thrust bearing might have worn something else, so won't be driving it now until the clutch is fitted and we'll do gearbox oil at the same time, hopefully, that should fix it! It seems to be reluctant to go anywhere fast and when it does it whines like mad. Did "the clutch test" (with accelerate and brake in 1st) and it didn't "pull" at all so it's apparently well on it's way out and could go any time.

If it was gearbox oil wouldn't it be a bugger to change gear?? It's getting a pig to go into reverse sometimes but the rest of the gears aren't too bad!
