Brakes
« on: 11 January 2011, 12:50 »
quick question, are the front brakes on a 1.8 golf bigger/better than on my 1.4? just wondering as i will have a 1.8 on the weekend as a donor for a few bits, just wondering if the brakes would be a worthwhile upgrade from what i have now.

If vented it will be worthwhile!

cheers guys, not sure if they are vented, i will check them out when i get the car and will deffo be swapping them if they are :P, i was mainly curious about the diamiter, i thought i read on here somewhere that there were tragic size brakes for the 1.4 lol, then they were bigger for the 1.6, 1.8 and 1.9, and then even bigger for the gti/vr6's

1.8 will probably have 239mm just like yours, in that case you wont need any of it. you can fit vented discs to yours simply by buying mk2 gti discs and pads.
it may have 256mm brakes but I'm pretty sure it wont

the mk3 non gti models had 3 different brake discs..... 239mm solid then 256mm solid and also 256mm vented but being a vw they can be hit and miss with whats fitted (My old 1.8 golf had 256mm solid and a vento 1.8 i bought had 239mm solid)
I believe the 256mm vented were only fitted to the 2.0 models, abs cars and higher powered tdi's (not sold in the uk!) but you can use mk2 parts and get 256mm vented if you want?

mk3 cabbys pretty much all had 256mm vented afaik, can also get the setup from passat, corrqado SEAT models etc. the 4 stud hubs are all interchangable except for polo/lupo and seat equivilant.  once you get 256+ hubs you can then fit 256 or 280mm front calipers and carriers, 280s can be used from 5 stud models as well as high spec 4 stud. just the hubs that need to be 4 stud only for obv reasons :)
