Fuel economy
« on: 10 January 2011, 16:01 »
Hi chap's ..

Im taking my belovied Mk1 Focus Rs ( sorry ford content ) .. Of the road to allow me to save for a few bit's and stop some prat hitting it during the rest of the winter, Has been a worrying one !..

Now i have a budget of 400-500 quid to spend, Ive been looking into allsort's 1.4 polo cl , 306 D turbo ( sorry )..

But looking around there are so many Mk3 gti 8v's around i would be a fool not to !.

However my mission is obviously save a little cash ! is this actually possible ??.

Currently the RS is reletivly thirsty as you would think from a 2ltr Turbo, 60 quid to fill up and i very rarely get more than 200 miles from that,, Probably 250 at a right push driving like a grandad !.
What are the mk3's like ?? , How much do you use a week ? how many miles and what sort of driving do you do to achive this ??.:)

Bit of a random question i would rather have something with a little poke if im to use it whilst the rs is off the road, I can see me dying of bordum in something silly gutless..

Cheers chaps

Well for starters theres not much poke in a standard mk3 8v.... i get about 32 Mpg being sensible and about 20 not being sensible usually costs about 55 quid to fill from empty

£55 = about 44 litres or about 9.5 gallons, I average around 30-35mpg (32.5 for the sake of argument) = 308.75 miles

I can squeeze out 40mpg on a motorway run with a light right foot, and 'spirited' driving can see around 20mpg, it's all down to the type of driving really.

If you want something cheap and fun to run (not maintain) then go for a Mk2 1.8 8v

Other wise you'll probs be wanting a 2.0 16v

I get at most 22 mpg in the vr usually around 18 most of the time i am a wee bit heavy footed...

or just go for a mk3 tdi or a vento tdi like mine mega miles out of them can run them on bio diesel as the pumps can take it not the slowest things with a tuning box i regularly see about 230 miles to £30

At the end of the day i guess your right, I mean a polo  would see less than the 40mpg stated  i guess with a bit of spirited twisty driving !!, Just not quite as fun lol..

Im gutted i think the scrappage scheme has got rid of most of the cheap cars ! Trying to find something is very hard
