It's very easy tbh mate.

Disconnect battery
Take connections to starter motor off.Usually just a 13mm spanner and a plug to unclip.
Undo 3 bolts securing it,they are pretty long as they go through the gearbox bellhousing.
Take off starter
refit the same as removal.

Simples

bit more complicated than that, unless you want to make life hard for yourself when you try to fit the new one. put a jack under the engine, then undo the nut or bolt from the top of the front engine mount. jack up engine till it just lifts off the mount THEN carry on as above.

if you dont jack up the engine its a real sod to get the bolts back in because the engine will fall forwards once the starter is removed since the bolts holding starter on also hold on the front mount bracket.

And remember to remove the PAS line bracket on the bottom bolt too.

No, different number of teeth on the gear (think 16v has 10 and 8v has 9, or vice versa).

plus the shape o it is different too. any 1.8-2.0 8v starter will fit, manual if yours is manual or auto if auto etc.  think 1.6 might fit too, some have a hybrid 020 gearbox?  MK2 golf 1.6-1.8 8v and 16v fit, but the plug on them is different so not ideal

edit: the above is for fitting starter to rod shift 020, not 02a apologies Noof

if its a factory mk3 16v its gonna have an 02a cable shift box, which means you cant use an 020 starter.  ignore my post above i thought you were doing it the other way round!

if you have an 02a box you need a MK3 16v or TDI starter, Passat and Corrado manual ones fit too but earlier ones have a different connector on so not ideal.  VR6 one might fit but the bellhousing is different so not 100% sure

Would be wise to remove the 10mm bolt that holds the water pipe to the engine nounting bracket too as I know from past experience that if the pipe is weak, then you could fracture it.

If you're handy with the tools then should take less than an hour to remove and refit, I had mine off in 15mins last weekend but it's not the first time i'd removed it so had experience on my side.
