Proof of alarm

Hi all, i know this has been brought up a couple of times recently but it hasnt answered my questions.

basically i have bought a car just before the new year. Its a T reg 1999 mk4 golf 1.4, it has been de-locked to both doors and has remote central locking (keyles entry). it is operated by a microscan transponder.
When i did an insurance quote on-line one of the details came up stating the car has a thacham cat2 alarm. i dont have any paperwork or certificates to prove this to an insurance company and neither dose the previous owner as it was fitted before he had the car.
Im not sure what model microscan exactly but will be investigating tomorrow.

If my alarm is a thacham approved system, will i still be liable to any discounts without any paperwork or certificates?

Im soon to be insuring the car and want to know where i stand,any info much appreciated.

Sorry mate unless you can produce the paperwork the insurance company will not give you a discount. The only way to get hold of the paper work is to find out what make alarm system you have and contact the company direct and see if they will send out another certificate???
What will happen then is that the insurance company will give you 2 weeks (usally) to send them the certificate, if you dont manage to get it to them they will contact you saying that your insurance has gone up and normally they will charge you a late admin fee too which varys in price.

So really the best thing to do is contact the maker of your alarm system asap and see if they can send another certificate out? If this also fails then the only other option is to take you car to an auto electricl specilist who fit alarms etc etc and then you can get them to check over the alarm system and check it is all in working and good condition, they can then print you a certificate to approve it for your insurance, however you will have to pay for this and not sure how much it is and also they need to be Thatch approved by the insurance.

Im in the same boat mate, my cars got an alarm but I dont have anyway paperwork for it. Until now Ive been with direct line and not covered for theft as they havent seen the proof but I have just switched to Chris Knott and they havent asked to see any paperwork for the alarm so I think I could be ok!

you can get any decent alarm company to recertify an alarm (as long as it is fitted to thatcham spec it should be fine)

but if you receive a discount for thatcham security and your car gets stolen many insurance co's wont pay out unless you can provide the certificate! (with my golf I had the cert and would of only needed to produce on a theft claim, yet on the passat I had to sign a declaration....... both HIC covered)

Like what Bradley said that if your does get stollen then the insurance company will ask for you to prove the certificate and if you cant then they wont pay out. Just make sure you guard your car with a raffle

security aint an issue for me at the moment, got the gaurd dog doing his rounds all day and knight where the car is 

so best option is to get a thatcham approved centre to have a look atmy alarm,get them to do what they need to do to make it up to there acceptable standard and get a new certificate printed out at my expense?

Yep best thing to do is phone round a load of companys that install alarms and check they are thatched approved first and get a price before you take the car down there. Basically a lot of these companys will just check that all the alarm is work and the imobiliser is working then they will source the alarm model, make and serial number to be put onto your certificate. Shouldnt take them long really but i have no idea how much it will cost.
I had it done for my old Punto that was chaved up and it cost me £50.
