For me the difference in insurance between an 8v mk3 and a 16v mk3 was very little

That sort of money will get you a pretty tidy, and solid Mk2, every bit as good as 1.5Ks worth of Mk3, so seriously worth considering... Old VWs are like old Fords, the older the better!

Thanks for the info

When i think of maybe getting a mk2 i think you need a fair ammount of mechanical knowhow (i haz none of this)
And trips to the garage. Not saying they are rust buckets but i dont know what to loom at in the older cars.

A mk3 will probably need as much mechanical attention as a mk2 now. mk3s will be at least 12( nearly 13) years old.

buy a good solid 1990/91 mk2 8v. best of both worlds. try and get a 1991 and you get most of the kit you get on a mk3.

thing is that in some peoples eyes (including mine) the mk3 and 4 are both nicer looking cars so he may want a nice looking car (all depends on OP age  which im guessing is young because insurance is an issue )  maybe one day i'll like the look of the mk2, when im middle aged perhaps :lipsrsealed:

Mk2 are defo worth a look, i got mine with 11month MOT , 6month tax, very clean, all undersealed inc engine bay. Just needed the by-pass valve taken out so i had heaters and the carb re-plumbing which is easy. 1.6 engine £395  Bargain alll day long.

Ford Ka, cheap insurance, great to drive.  No need to fix it.

Ford Ka, cheap insurance, great to drive.  No need to fix it.

Cheap - Yes
Good Drive - Reasonably
No need to fix - True, just check the underside for rot.

My mum had one of these for 5 or 6 years, was a hoot to drive along backroads, slow and frustrating on a-roads and motorways. Very cheap to insure and run, the only thing that went wrong in her ownership was someone (me) sliding it into a kerb and buckling the wheel/bending the wishbone, and a couple of rear shocks.

The last MOT showed it would need considerable welding underneath due to rust, same story with my g/f's grandmas so worth remembering if considering them.

I've got a Ka that I keep in the Isle of Man as a runabout.  During TT the mountain road is one way.  That Ka often overtakes much faster vehicles.  They do rust a bit, especially as I've fitted a tow ball to launch a boat.  But no MOT on the IOM so who cares?
