it shouldn't have frozen if you had the correct concentration of washer fluid in it If you haven't already I'd get the 5.5 litre bottle to replace it. Approx £20. You'll also need a grommet or two to plug the extra hole for the headlight washers. You can get those from Halfords.Of course if you have headlight washers then none of the above applies

The old one comes out really easily, the new one doesn't go back in quite as easily. Worth it though as it will ages between having to fill the thing up
All you want is the 5.5. litre from ANY Golf that had the headlight washer system installed There might be a part number kicking around one of my threads as i remember posting it up
