1.3 Jetta

Hello all you lovely mk2 owners, my brother in law has just got himself a 1990 1.3 Jetta and hes got a long list of things he wants to do to it. One of the things is to uprate the brakes, Now I have the stub axles, carriers, calipers and discs of a mk3 GTI, can we fit these without a lot of trouble?
Any help is much appreciated :-)

Would have been easier to fit the entire rear beam from the MK3 (if it fits on the Jetta), that way you would have got the ARB and the brake compensator too.....

You'll need different handbrake cables, and the disks from a MK3 GTi are 5 stud, so you'll have some decisions about what to do there, in terms of going to 4 stud all round or converting the front to 5 stud....

As above you'll need to make sure the discs are 4x100 (unless you're doing a 5x100 conversion all round). Other things you'll need are brake compensator valve and bracket and you'll need to redo the brake lines too. Firstly the front to back two will need to be bent to fit the valve, then you'll need to make up 4 others as the disc set up has two flexis per side instead of the one used on drum set ups. Obviously you'll need the flexis too and two new handbrake cables as the disc ones are different to the drum ones.

Why are you doing this conversion? Only necessary if significantly uprating the power. Personally I'd just stick a set of mk2 16v gti fronts on - 256mm vented over the 239mm solid ones currently fitted.

He's just turned 17 so is going to run the car for a year as a 1.3 then look at engine conversions, also hates the look of the drums 
I have a broken mk3 sat on my drive that has the complete brake system on it so was gonna give him the all the stuff he needs to convert, hes a trainee mechanic so will be a good learning curve for him.
So am i right in thinking all the bits off the mk3 will bolt straight to the Jetta but I will need to change the brake cables etc etc

The stub axles and calipers will go straight on, nothing else is any good.

Shopping list;

Handbrake cables x2
Rear flexies x4
N/s rear beam mount with integrated compensator mount
Brake compensator (£60+ if bought new)
Rear solid lines - either make them yourself or think you can buy them pre-shaped.
4x100 rear discs
New pads if required

... basically tell him to get over the look of drums, just paint them if he's bothered. If better braking required then first off get a 22mm master cylinder and 9"servo then get a pair of hubs and calipers off appropriate Vw/Seat for 256mm set up, will be far cheaper and more effective.

Edit; This job is a lot easier if you drop the rear beam, in which case add new beam bushes to the shopping list - there are some pretty decent poly ones on ebay for £30. I also have a 1.3 Jetta and did this rear disc conversion on mine as I'm fitting a G60 engine - pic of what's involved if he goes ahead with it (I used mk4 calipers);

Just get some 239mm vented discs with correct pads along with some longer slider bolts (from the gti) and you'll have 8v gti spec front brakes

Mew, its the rears he wants changing the most.
Simeon, doing the rear beam swap sounds like a better option, does the mk3 beam change like for like with the mk2?

check if the mk3 beam has a bias valve on it, if it dowes then it will swap right over, just fit MK2 gti rear discs to convert to 4x100 as said. if it doesnt have a bias valve then you need to fit one, either fit mk2/3 one after swapping over all the brackets required to mount it, or fit an manually adjustible one somewhere.

if the MK3 has 280mm front brakes then the calipers and carriers can be used on a MK2, just need 256/280mm front bearing carriers from a 4x100 car such as corrado, passat, SEAT ibiza/toledo/cordoba, high spec mk3 non-gti, MK2 16v/G60 etc.

basically anything SEAT/VW thats 4x100 with at lest 256mm brakes will work except polo/lupo and the SEAT equivalent (arosa?)
