New MK4 Owner - Locking Problems, Please Help!

Hi

I picked up a MK4 GTI 1.8 20v last night relatively cheap. I know it wasnt going to be overly quick as i have read reviews, but i am happy with it having gone from a MK1 1.3 Driver!

I will post some pics up of both cars shortly so everyone can see.

I am having a bit of a problem with the MK4 though, and was wondering if anyone can help me. I only have the key for the car and not the fob, now it seemed to be working fine but when i got in late last night it too me an age to lock the car and it is also doing the same today. For some reason when i go to lock the car the both windows automaticall come down and the car doesnt lock. Is this something common or am i doing something wrong?

Any urgent help would be appreciated as i cant lock my car currently.

when you hold the key to unlock the windows should come down. May sound ridiculous but have you tried turning the key the other way? 

have you tried both the doors and boot lock? I'm not sure where the locks are wired into but sounds like an electrical problem if non are locking

Ok, so the windows bit is right, but still not locking. It was working when i locked it first last night, then took an age to lock it today, and now not locking at all. I have tried the boot and passenger which both lock, but they do not control the central locking only the drivers side does.

I'd have a look at the wiring in behind the door card then, it may just be a dodgy conncetion. it might just be the barrel has seized  WD40!!

I have done some reading, and apparently the solder on the modules tend to crack stopping the central locking working correctly, the easiest way to fix is to resolder the joints. Ever heard of this?

Anyone had any experience with this?

I had same problem with mine , the problem for me was the rear window wiper hose was cracked and leaking water onto the lock wich made my central locking and alarm dodgy, I dnt have money at the mo so I jst open the boot panel dried all that was wet n now I don't use the rear wiper n now problem has gone, take the panel off the boot inside n see if there is any water where the wiper motor is, hope this helps

Mixed feedback on this.  Some have been very successful, others have ended up replacing the door module any way.  I guess it depends on often you want to strip the door down to replace it

I stripped down my drivers side door today, looks like my drivers side module solder joints were cracked a little - although didnt seem to be enough to cause a problem, so i soldered them anyway to be on the safe side but when putting all my locks back together found my lock itself was broken which was why the drivers said door wasnt locking at all. That will be sorted by the end of the week but the passenger door isnt locking along with the central locking still so going to stip the passenger door down and check the module on that to see if the solder joints have cracked that side also.

Will let everyone know how i get on.

Right, so today I stripped the passenger side down and looked at the module, and sure enough the solder had cracked but unlike the driver side it was quite bad, anyway, after re-soldering the joint and putting it back in the car the central locking now works as it should along with the passenger door light etc which didn't work! All I need now is to wait for my lock repair kit to repair the drivers lock.

One repair down, about a million to go!

dave  having very same problem on my daughters car going to try the solder thing tomorrow think the door barrel could be ****ed as key turns 360 where do you get a lock repair kit? and why do people have kids.
