Thought the vr6 only weighed 140kg without the gearbox, didn't think the 1.8T weighed much less, prob close to similar weight by the time you add the turbo on and the pipework? If anything a twin turbo'd vr6 would be ideal

Getting lighter components like alloys, such as "SSR Competition-H", then try and replace any external panels with lighter ones. Getting lighter battery as well, such as braile batteries. Uprate bushes like dogbone, this will increase cabin vibrations but reduce wheel hop. Smooth airbox out or induction kit. Full catback exhaust system with 2.5", upgrade camshafts to like 264degrees, this will prob give you the biggest bang for your buck on a N/A car

The 2.0 16v lump is lighter than the vr6.
The 1.8T lump is not much lighter than a vr6.

right i get it ! so like (golf-sib) said the ideal v-dub would be a turbo vr6 ! how true is this ? would the turbo on a vr6 compensate for the heavy weight ? and how would it compare to the 1.8t or the 2.0 16v with a turbo on it ?

Turbo vr6 would be good but a charger one would be better in my opion just because you have the power there whilst yu have lag on the turbo, plus a turbo can run out of puff so all your power is in the middle. Im not saying turbo's are crap i just think on a track a charger might be better as your not having to keep the revs high to keep the turbo spooling.
The other issue i would be thinking is what ever you through in the engine from turbo to charger is where to mount the intercooler for maximum air flow plus you really need to have the pipes short and stright with as little turns as possible, too much pipe work will mean too much lag, you need to have the air as free and easy flowing as possible.

Really looking forward to seeing this when it is done, should be goood mate.

so why is it people keep telling me the vr6 is heavy and the gti would have been a better choice if they both weigh simmilar ?

All figures from Autocar

Golf GTI 8V     1060kg
Golf GTI 16V   1160kg
Golf VR6         1230kg

A VR lump is a lot heavier than a ABF
