Hi all,

A friend of mine has recently bought a golf mk3 se 1.4 and it seems like something is missing from the airfilter pipeline. Is there meant to be an airbox or something at the end of this pipe as it seems odd that it just sits freely in the engine bay!!??

(Sorry for the oversized photo)

Cheers

Will

Hard to tell with that photo but the end that is sat on the wing either fits through an access a bit lower down for the air intake, or it should fit into the airbox. If one end of the pipe is going to clean air through the bodywork, my guess is the previous owner had a cone filter on it but took it off for the sale, then just binned the air box when he fitted it! Very bad idea to run without some sort of filter though mate!

That is from memory correct, air filter should be in the black plastic housing on top the engine

^^^What he said.

Airbox is that black box ontop of the engine, filter will be inside.

As Wayne and DazVR6 said, the air filter is in the black box on top of the engine. That piping is just the air feed.

thanks for the reponses.

Yes the airfilter is the black box on top of the engine.

It just seemed strange that the pipe from the air filter just hung freely in the engine bay!

Also the car seems to be running very rich as there is a strong smell of petrol fumes from the exhaust when hot or cold. Could this be due to the air intake??

Cheers

Yeah it seems odd but that's how it leaves the factory. I doubt it's causing the smell.

Could be a broken spi unit mount or a faulty temp sender causing it to run rich.

That looks like the pipe from a MPI engine (AEX)  the end should push through a rubber grommet in the wing, if there isnt one its fallen out and left the pipe knocking about but yes its "normal"  and has no effect.

Rich running AEX is usually coolant temp sensor as mr wayne said, they dont suffer the SPI rubber gasket issues. Breather pipes clog up big time though, can cause smelly oily gasses to blow into the engine bay/cabin which might trick you into thinking its running rich,  a good clean out will sort that.

ok cheers thanks for the advice.

It seems to have very poor mpg also so im assuming it must be the temp sensor. Ive also read this can be due to the lambda sensor?
