Fan won't stop
« on: 01 January 2011, 13:04 »
A couple of days ago i stopped the car and noticed the fan was running. Left the car for about 30 minutes and it was still running. Since then the fan wont stop after the engine turns off. The coolant levels are fine and the temperature guage is firmly in the norml range. Not sure why the fan is comoing on in these cold temperatures anyway, but any suggestions warmly welcomed.

yeah unplug the fan for a few seconds and then plug it back in and it may reset and turn off (sorted mine). Then its new fan switch time. Its the switch on the bottom corner of the radiator. A genuine one isnt expensive, but you need to drain the coolant to fit it.

Yeh sounds like a fan switch mate. Its simply an electric switch that detects coolant temperature and turns the fan on when it gets hot enough. I believe a new switch just screws directly into the radiator, hence the rad would need to be emptied to fit it.

Does your temperature gauge still sit normal?

Guys

Thanx all for the replies. I have today unplugged it and then replugged it but that didn't work. Looks like its a new switch which doesn't sound so tricky. The temp gauge reads fine at the moment - it is bloody cold out there after all.

Hehe yeh the cold weather helps. Just usual scenario with heat - dont let it go too high. Let us know if the new switch does the job!

You don't need to replace the coolant first, just be very very quick. Kinda like if your submarine was leaking. Then just top up

Lol yeh theres that way, but its so annoying when your submarine does leak and you drown!

Obvious point but if you do it with the coolant in, make sure its cool!

Want to swap mate? Mine wont come on!

Had it fixed during the summer and everything seemed normal again, now its back to its old tricks and playing up. I'm only getting away with it due to the cold weather though.
