Mk2 gone lame

Hi Guys, newbie on this forum, a work colleague has a Mk2, but he's a bit of a techno-phobe so I'm dooing this for him. His Mk2 has now packed up after gradually losing power. It had been running smoothly ebnough but just seemed a bit flat. After driving uphill for a couple of miles he noticed it getting slower until eventually, after struggling onto the motorway it stopped altogether. he's had it recovered to work where we have gone right thru the fuel system checking both pumps, relays changed hall effect thingy, changed fuel distributor, checked and adjusted flappy valve in the airbox, new coil, plugs, and so on. Still wont bloody go. It tries to fire when cranking but just wont pick up. We're both stumped. Has anyone got any ideas? Apparently the fuel filter was changed recently too. Heeeeelp!

Dunno exactly since I wasn't there, just got the gory details when the tow truck arrived. It's always sounded lumpy but never tractor like.

mine died in december loosin power gradually got louder n louder n cut out when i pulled up turned out
i had blew the head gasket and took a chunk out the head which meaned i needed i new head
but mine sounded like a lawnmower as it started to die then got to tractor noise

I don't think it is anything like that Rob. Funnily enough it has run since, it was trailered to a mechanics, he fitted a new coil, it ran but was still guttless, then gradually packed up again. My feeling is that it is a fuel problem, but we've checked pretty much all of the system parts, unless there is something we've missed.

Might be you need a new MAF and adjusting the flap isn't enough ...

'scuse my ignorance David, could you clarify MAF for me. We've changed the great chunk of metal wot sits on the airbox and sends fuel down the pipes to the injectors, is that what you mean? My suspicion is blocked fuel line, how many filters are there? I know there is one with the main fuel pump under the drivers seat, and i think a canister type in the engine bay which was supposedly changed recently.

Yes you have changed the airflow meter (MAF) so i would rule that out.
Something no-one has mentioned, have you checked the cambelt? is it ok? is it tight?
check the static ignition timing marks all line up.

new cambelt, valve timing correct, new dizzy, ignition timing correct. See why we are both so frustrated? Haven't really got to grips with auxilliary air wot not and extra fuel thingy, but would they really cause this much trouble?
