Mk2 CRAZY Fuel Consumption

Not been on here enough, and of course its always bad when you only want something!!

Its a Mk2 1.6 Golf 2e2 carb from what i can gather. Used to get approx 260ml to a tank, no lucky to get 200!! approx 18 mpg SCARY!! 

I have stripped the plugs out and gapped them a little larger. Haynes spec (lol) 24 - 32 thou have adjusted to 32. Were covered in black soot and wondering about carb adjustment or timing. Is this more likley to be due to the carb??? 

I have had oily deposits on the lower edge of air filters for a long while, but that was no worse on looking today. I still have a reasonably clean filter.

The carb had a change last year on the warm up vacum jobbie, and has been all good again since.

Can anyone even tell me if anti clockwise or clockwise on the mixture screw on top is a weaker or stronger mix on this?? Being dumb but cant find a reference in the book as to which ways which!! (DOH)

hi,

from previous experience with that pierburg carb they are nothing but trouble!
i bought a direct replacement weber carb from gsf a few years ago and it sorted out any probs i had at the time.

this is only my personal experience though and may be worth a second opinion

I would be checking for leaks, although my golf is the 1.8 gti I had a similar issue and was only achieving 22mpg, I checked and found i had a leak on the servo pipe which had been rubbing against the inlet manifold and had split, I only found this after I moved the pipe about as it was concealled against the bulkhead, after i sorted out the split servo hose my mpg shot back up to 29 mpg, this is obviously going by the onboard computer.

I will have a prod about this avo and see if i can see / hear any leaks on the servo vacum pipe etc.    can anyone just confirm which way on the CO adjuster is which to adjust the mix weaker?  Thanks

You want one of these. 18mpg you'll make the cash back quicker than you might imagine, had one on my old 1.6 Driver and it used to fly.

P.S its what I ordered yesterday, im getting poor mgp (100miles of half a tank) and poor running at low revs. Ive a 1.6 aswell.

My webber wasn't that good on fuel but then better then the pooberg they come with. My mate gets 100miles to 20litres in his 1.6 driver. Standard pieburg on that.

Find someone who actually knows what they're doing to set it up for you. Made all the difference, used to love the induction noise on it, which tbh used to hurt fuel consumption   Mind you, when I started driving fuel was about 75p a litre But that still equates to about the same as it is now.
