heater box

  sadly am now suffering the old classic not much heat from the matrix, its slowly been getting colder over the last few weeks and now to top it all the blower fan after a lot of squeaky start ups has packed in and only works on 3 
so i decided to investigate behind the dash its easy says the book after much unusual wordage it looks like the heater resistor had died and the fan is not much better
the center vents are missing their levers to open them  and there is a lot of sticky grey foam coming out of all the vents ; quite horrid ;
whilst looking into the airbox both flaps appear to be moving properly but they both have holes in them  is this right as the air is not going as per the vent lever position
many questions include can they be fixed? is it best to take out the fan with the air box and then replace the matrix too  oh the expense 
ps at least its warmed up this week

thanks thats a great looking set up 
 but i think it would be necessary to dismantle the whole of the interior to set it up 
mk3 will be the way to go ( matrix not golf  )

Get a new matrix - Mk3 one from GSF will do.

Replace the neoprene on the vent gates with similar material.

Oil the baring on the motor or fit a new one.

also is the plastic ducting still available from anybody? as the center vents cannot be used as the old stuff is all distorted and gets in the way

Not sure if you can get the part from VW, my money says no, but call anyway.

Best thing is to look in the classifieds or egay.
