Which flash gun?
« on: 28 December 2010, 21:08 »
For my Canon EOS 1000d. Used for shooting pretty much anything, getting fed up of not being able to angle the flash to bounce it off surfaces.

I've done a bit of research and come up with:

-Nissin Di662
-Metz AF-4
-Yongnuo YN468

Or are there any advantages to buying a Canon flash gun even though they seem very expensive compared to the rest.

Any suggestions/advice as it's all baffling me :undecided:

I've got a couple of Yongnuo 460-IIs that I use as off camera flashes. I have tried them as on camera flashes but TBH wouldn't recommend it. They provide plenty of light but you have to set the power manually whch you really don't want to be doing with an on camera flash unit.

Nissin Di622Mk2

I've got two of the Mk1s and they are cracking units for the money, the reason you want the Mk2 is because the Mk1 would only sync with the pre-flash so you'll have to be using i-TTL or whatever canon call their rubbish, this meant you couldn't sync with manual flash, there was also issue with the flash going into standby when on non-slave mode, the shoe contacts being disabled in slave mode.  I modded mine to get round these problems, and about 6 months later the Mk2 was announced.

Really you want a proper canon one, as you'll get genuine canon TTL metering, better AF assist, Auto FP etc, but you will be paying alot more for a canon unit.

the above really, a canon unit will produce better results that an after market, the same what the genuine glass does.  I found the i-TTL on the nissin would be slightly over powered, compared to the Nikon flash; if you're using these for off camera then the light will be the same (daytime balanced) and the only difference will be the level of control (power settings) and the guide number (how bright a light it can produce).

thanks for the help Alex!

I think I'll look into the Nissin or the Canon flash guns.Seems the next logical thing to buy in my set up.

I had a few minutes last night so decided to do a quite test (no pics) between my SB-900 and the Nissin Di622 to compare the difference in i-TTL; camera set to manual blah blah blah, basically the Nikon flash exposed the scene correctly and the Nissin was underexposed, dialled in +0.7 on the flash compensation and they were about the same.

Really it just reiterated what I'd assumed, that the own brand / 'genuine' flash will have better metering.

Also check the spec on the 430ex II, you'll probably find it's got features like illimination pattern, fill in flash, greater zoom range, manual zoom.

ive got the 430exii and if you look around you can get some bargins think i found mine on ebay for £150 would of loved the next one up but wa like £300

but it comes down to that old saying of 'you get what you pay for' but with my 430exii its been great on camera and with a set of cheap ebay trigges was great off camera as well

Must admitt i dont use it that much now due to my Lencarta lights but its always worth having a decent flash gun in your bag its saved me a few times when the batt on the reciever for my Lencarta lights failed

Think the 430 is out of my price range, may go for the cheaper canon one as it'll probably still do more than I need...

I wouldn't bother with the 270 as you only get bounce in landscape orientation, even then it's only forward; if I'm using a single on camera flash then bouncing off a wall can create a nice Rembrandt lighting effect.

you can get the 430 for £150 here :afro:

Flash research is really doing my head in! Possibly in a position to buy and my head is leading me to the Nissin Di622 mkII that can be had for 120ish.

So will this sort me out for off camera wireless work (if i bought triggers) and a decent on camera flash. Fed up of researching it now!
