MAF Disconnected - lean?

This is regarding a 1.8t I have a 16mm hole on the turbo intake pipe where the dump valve was with nothing to block it up so I figured I should disconnect the mass air flow sensor and run it like that for a few days until I get a hose bung. The reason for the hole is because I fitted a fmic with the dump valve relocated to the cold side. But I noticed that the fuel mixture smells a bit off, I'm not worried about it running rich but is there any chance that without the maf connected it might run lean?
Also is it alright to drive about with the maf disconnected?

why would you drive with it disconnected ??

I've just had a fmic fitted, the charge pipe has no outlet for the dump valve feed, instead it is relocated to the cold side on the throttle body. The problem is this has left an outlet on the turbo intake pipe with nothing connected, so I figured with the MAF connected it will run lean because the hole is after the maf.

The ecu uses the MAF(RL) reading vs and a constant of around 0.082XXXX to work out the (RK) relative fuel which is then worked out in to (TE) injecton on time. When the car is under part throttle, light load and idle the ecu run at lambda 1.001 for emmission control.  With the maf in place the mapping of the RL RK with give the correct injection on time to achive lambda 1.001 this is called open loop fuel capped by closed loop fuel trims.  With the car running spot on the injection on time should be around 2.04ms with the block 32 fuel trims at 0.   So if you have a 16mm hole in the tip the RL reading will be incorrect and the fuel trims will be all over the place to correct the closed loop lambda control.

When the car has fault code in will run lambda of around 0.93 which is richer,again with the RL via maf the trims should be 0.  When you disconnect the maf the fuel will run in a generic TE based on a ecu calibration and closed loop lambda, the problem is fuel trim if they are over -/+25 on both add and mult then the car cannot fuel correct and will run rich which on idle and light load will wash the cat out and produce a really bad smell.

So that the technical part sorted.  Now for the low tech part of my post.... A bit of chopped off wooden broom handle will fit in the 16mm hole sweet as a nut..lol

Thanks for that Nick - had no idea you was on golfgtiforum! I had a hunch the ecu will run a sort of fail-safe when the maf is disconnected or an error is brought up, that and the lambda sensor. I run a 3" decat so no problem there with the cat  :evil:
I had found a bung from the forge split-r dump valve that was used to block up one of the outlets on that bov but I'm just worried it might fall down into the turbo because only a few threads actually get into the hose. Tommorow I'll be able to drive by a local tuning garage and pick up a hose bung or have them dab up one.

Been here comming upto 3 years now and like with ukmkivs I have many happy customers and mates.

Its not worth dropping the bung down the tip its guaranteed to kill the turbo, I have seen it many times.

What was the lambda code?  If you have a duff lambda sensor the the car can only run via RL/RK=TE so no fuel trims or safe margin for fuel errors.

Im on the uk-mk4 alot more and yea your definately very well known and respected there and I can see you are here too  :cool:
lambda sensor are working fine, I replaced front o2 only 6 months ago (AUM) believe they are wideband ones. I haven't had vag-com on it yet (my laptop only lasts a few minutes without mains plugged in permenantly) but tommorow I'll have my hose bung in place, MAF connected and I can finally reap the benefits of the fmic on a stage 2 map!
