not a golf but stil dubb'n! sharan 56 2.0 TDI
« on: 15 December 2010, 15:35 »
got a little rattle comming from drivers side, only makes noise when its driven not stationary and revved. been to a local mechanic and he says its the turbo bearings, car has only 55k miles on it and recently serviced with the pd oil. there is no white or black smoke comming out the exhaust. no loss of power you can only hear the rattling noise from inside of car not outside. the wistle on the turbo is sweeter then sugar. could it be the turbo? what are the symtoms of nakard bearings on a turbo?

Is your mechanic absolutely sure it's the turbo bearings?

Is the rattling noise constant or is it intermittent? Try driving in all gears on load and see if the noise can be replicated. Personally, I think the rattling could be something else rather than the turbo. This is because if the bearings were damaged the car would've gone straight to limp mode. Either that or you would be seeing significant smoke or oil consumption; the turbo should be fine

If in doubt, check with another mechanic - always good to get a second opinion. Why does your local mechanic say it's the bearings? Whilst you're messing around with the turbo get it cleaned with Innotec!

well he said that there was another vw in there garage and it had same prob and the guy had to replace the turbo and he had paid £500 for a re-conditioned turbo (fitted). thing is that it only does it when under load but after certain speed the noise goes away. there aint no smoke or oil being used as far as im concerned. if i rev the car stationary theres no rattle, but driving uder 30mph theres a rattle and if i go over bumps theres a louder rattle, you cant hear it from outside of the car just from the inside. think i will have to take it to another mechanic. its my uncs sharan. boyo i love it after 2k revs the turbo pulls you back.
also what turbo will i need to replce it with if i have to? and is £500 to much for a recon turbo & fitted? also have you used innotec? any good? seems like your recommending it to me

all depends where the rattle is coming from and what kind of rattle it is.

Personally I would rule out the easy and cheap stuff first before finally saying it's the turbo. Although turbos can fail at early mileage, for it to fail at 55k miles is rather odd. Secondly, you say that the rattle only happens below or on 30 mph, but at stationary and any other speed the sound goes away - I reckon it might be a worn suspension component. Things like, CV joints and ARB bushes can fail at that kind of mileage; they do need replacing often, especially in weather-beaten, pot-hole ridden roads. If they're worn then most certainly you will get rattling and clonking sounds if you drive over rough road or pot holes, etc.

Reconditioned turbos shouldn't be more than £300. Anything more, then in my opinion, you're getting ripped off. You can buy new turbos for around £500-600. But fitting costs will depend on your mechanic. Just buy the same turbo as your old one, you don't need a different one unless your uncle is after a turbo-charged stallion (o..k maybe not for a Sharan!)

Innotec is just a turbo cleaning solution - basically cleaning the turbo's guts out to get it squeakly clean. Often helps to resolve limp mode problems, especially if the turbo is clogged up with carbon deposits, etc. Obviously, not important in your case if it turns out the the turbo is flubbered, but for the majority of us, it is simply a service cleaning solution for the turbo.

the noise gets loud as you go faster, could be the cv but then we did jack the side up that was rattling and i drove it jacked up, it didnt make a rattle. you can hear the rattle inside the car but when the window is open you cant hear jack.

But, by jacking the wheel up you've taken the entire vehicle load off that wheel so the rattling would go away/be minimised. Anyhow, see if you can get at least a second opinion. That way you can be for sure it's definitely not something else rattling.
