Thanks for responses guys.  To be fair I am on a bit of a budget.  Continentel Sport Contact 3's seem to be around the £120 mark each.  I could prob stretch to that at a push.  Should I stick with these or are there any better tyres which cost a bit less?  Unlikely I know, but thought it was worth asking!

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy Falken FK452's... I did, and i regret it. I tried to boot it in 2nd gear at about 35mph the other day to overtake someone, and it just triggered the ESP and didnt go anywhere! It wasnt raining, the ground was damp, it wasnt even that cold (about 7.5degC) and it just understeers round any corner... Its really bad - as soon as winter is over i'll be getting some real tyres!

............have a look at Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta mate.

Another vote for the Vredesteins from me. Very happy with them so far.

Anyone tried the Contisport 5s?
Camskills are listing them with a 225/40/18 size, but that size is not listed on the Continental site..

Had michellin PS3's fitted last monday, great tyres so far, shame about the fitters damaging my imaculate alloy in the process.

I've had Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's on my car. Excellent summer road tyre, not so good at 10/10ths around the 'ring!!!!

I had a Toyota Auris SR180 before my golf gti. It was a high powered diesel with 180bhp & 400nm so accelerating hard in the damp/wet was some what difficult at times. I found the Toyo T1R to be brilliant! One very damp day i was flying around & hit aroundabout alot quicker than i expected. I thought then that was it & that i was going to right the car off but no! The car was fine not even a squeal from the tyres. I would highly recommend these tyres. Specially in the wet which is when most people get caught out!! when they cost £98 a tyre for the golf gti i see no reason not to have them.. i know the reviews on the web aren't brilliant on these tyres but for the money i really can't see what the problem is? At the moment i have mich pilot sport 3 on the front & i think there very good but the £130 a tyre isn't attracting me that much.
