Help - GTI damage
« on: 07 December 2010, 10:46 »
First time poster here so hoping you can help.

Last week in the snow driving very slowly I lost control of my GTI on an icy downhill corner, I narrowly missed a wall and hit the back of a parked Vovlo 2004 V40 instead. The owner came out and we looked at the damage - seemed like an honest chap and he said he'd get a quote for the repair of what looked like a cracked and damaged rear bumper panel.

My GTI had taken a crack to the front bumper panel underneath the headlight, a dent to the front hood and the front bumper panel was now popped out very slightly - I had to remove some black plastic that had broken off.

The chap has just come back to me with a quote - £780 as the mechanic is concerned that the metal frame beneath the bumper may be damaged. Ooof.
I was going to try and sort this out off the insurance as I have 3 years no claims and a premium of £650 at the moment. Losing the NCB will no doubt double that premium and that for me would mean selling the car and getting something much smaller.

My excess is £600 - so at the moment his claim would put me £180 over that. I'm worried that a quote for getting the GTI fixed will be more than £1000 - which might make the insurance option more viable. I have very little cash at the moment so repairs on my car would have to wait.

I'll post some pictures up but would be grateful for any rough estimate people might have.

Do not pay for that guys repair, let the insurance company sort it out thats what you pay it for.  Besides if you have done damage to your car as well thats going to be pricey.

Thanks for the advice - i'll contact insurers

looks like premium will jump a fair wack - which may make keeping the car unaffordable

oh well

You never know, insurance will go up but I think you would be more out of pocket if you tried to sort both repairs out of your own pocket without going through the insurers.  Hope you get it all sorted anyway.
