Locking wheel nuts
« on: 05 December 2010, 17:43 »
So my sister went to get new tyres today at a normal garage, turns out theres 2 different locking wheel nuts on the car and only one key!

She is going to her VW main dealer tomorrow to give them sh!t, but if they cant get to the bottom of it, as the car hasnt been there for a year, anyone got any good ideas of how to remove a locking wheel nut without the key?

I guess one way is to tap a thread into the middle of it, bung a bolt in with some super glue and hope whacking it hard will loosen it!

If the foreign locking bolt is a vw golf one then your dealer should be able to sort you out as there are apparently less than 10 key versions for the golf.
Without traction power is nothing!

so my sister goes to the garage, it turns out theres an complete extra set of 4 locking wheel nuts on both off side wheels, as well as the original set.  so 3 locking nuts on off side front and 3 locking nuts on off side back, for which she didnt have the key.  the garage obviously said they have never seen this before and considering the hassle I had with the supplying dealer (Citygate) upon purchase 4 years ago, I am not surprised. so they took off the offending nuts with the master and she brought new normal nuts to replace them.  then the service reception kicked up a fuss saying they arent insured to put nuts on a wheels (workshop was busy), they relented in the end and put them on.

The new dealer (not supplying) claims when they serviced the car over the past 2 years, they never took the wheels off.  However the brake fluid was changed and surely you need to take the wheels off to bleed them?

all in all a complete pain in the neck, probably a total one off, but please everyone check you dont have extra locking nuts on your car, as you could be screwed if you break down!

There is no need to remove wheels to bleed brakes if you have a ramp.

It's very unusual to have a mixture of locking bolts. Possibly somebody has damaged them in the past.

I have a set you can have.  (removed from a Passat 2002) Just pay me the postage.

no we dont need a set, thats the point we had 2 full sets, but only 1 key, so removed the extra set and put normal bolts on.
