+1 diesel because they good for economy and if your travelling over the uk doing moto-x you need a cheap car with torque..
Mk4 Golf GTI anniversary and mk6 golf tdi :)

Avoid the 2.0 and as already posted might be worth looking at diesels.

Can anyone reccommend a good diesel model? I'm still looking for something with a kick! I've been driving a 108D Mercedes Vito for the past 2 years and I'm totally over vans for a while!

TDI 130 is a good choice.

In your situation perhaps look at either the PD130 or PD150,both would feel puchy low down.If you felt the need you could do a hybrid turbo conversion and get 225bhp+

Yeah i read up on that. Wonder what the increase in insurance would be?! I was amazed too see the 1.9 GT TDI has got 54MPG! to the 1.8 GTI haveing only 34MPG! That made my mind up alone!
