top mount play

How nuch play should there be in the front strut top mount once all
Of it tightened up? Ive done the stupid slotted nut as far as i can but the mount still has some wobble. I just want to be sure because the uprated one i fitted lasted 3 months so it was either my mate not tightening it enough or bad quality.

Asked the same question myself when I put new shocks and G60 top mounts on a few months back.  Tight as the slotted nut would go, there was still a slight wobble/bit of play in the mount.

This I was told, is normal.

Depends on what you mean by wobble?

If the car is on even ground, the top mounts should have no actual play in them (ie. grabbing the metal cup and pulling/pushing). However, if the weight is off the wheels, they can sometimes have slight up/down play.

If in doubt, get it checked by a professional or someone experienced. Isn't DH on your island?

I think what he and I meant is when the shocks are off the car, and you are fitting the top mount.

Mine has a little wobble in it.  Shocks and top mount were brand new so no dodgy threads.

Yeah thats what i meant. Its back on the car now and it seems ok, there is no movement or play when its bolted to the car.
Cant believe that my new one only lasted a few months.

ah, then i'm not sure. Its been a long time since i messed with traditional springs/shocks on a mk2. You'd probably be better switching to the mk3 top mount setup

I had a bit of 'wobble' in the new oem spec lemforder mounts I recently fitted. its just from the lower bearing cap which is held up onto the bearing when on the car.

I was interested in the mk3 mounts, but apparently they raise the ride height a tad (10mm or so), so I didnt bother as I was fitting shocks and springs...

Damn thing still jnocks when im driving. So now its a case of whether to get mk3 setup or the vw tool. Dont want it to raise the nose because it sits quite nicely as it is

if ur suspensions still knocking, id check ur lower arms and lower ball joint for play

Check the outer ball joint (as above) and the wishbones themselves for play. You tend to notice this going over speed bumps.

I used to get a nasty knock when the front wish bone bush (rear) was worn. You tend to notice this turning lock-to-lock.
