GT TDi Rear Axle
« on: 03 December 2010, 18:27 »
Hi folks,

This darn snow has lead me to kerb the motor from the passenger side wheels and the garage says it needs new rear axle, tracking and balancing possibly some front damage so I'm looking at a hefty bill.  The car drives all over the place so much so its not safe to drive.  My question for anyone who knows is is a rear axle for a GT TDi the same as a rear axle off any other mk4 golf or are they different?

Any comments most appriciated :-(

Thanks in advance

No, not yet...only dropped my car off Friday.  I have been told there are two variations depending on the size of the roll bar?  A parts dealer told me he sold hundreds and that its a matter a millimeters and that they all fit?  A girl at work got a 1.6 so I'm goin to ring vw on monday and ask for a part number for a rear axle using her reg and then call back 5 mins after and ask for the same using mine and if they are the same I should get the same part numbers and if they are different I'll question why so I think I'll get an official answer tht way just to be sure.  The part dealer quoting 80 used, saying that its 450+vat from vw new so not sure what to do really.....would a secind hand one be sufficient?

Cheers folks, any comments would be most appriciated :-)

rear axle size won't be governed by a roll bar that isn't even fitted to the rear lol

Maybe the guy was on about the 4WD set up as the R32 and the 4wd set ups both have roll bars thingys, no?  I want to make sure its rights as I dont want to have to shell out to have the work done twice!

there is one for 2wd no roll bar

and one for 4wd which has a roll bar..

In your front wheel drive there is only ONE style of rear axle..

VW quoted 1500 to replace rear axle, paid 200 to have the axle replaced, tracking and balancing.  Well chuffed.  Two new tyres on the front and its purring like a dream.  My mate says as well as it remapped, the turbo been wound up and said it one of the quickest TDi he drove?  What else can you do apart from remappin?  Anyone got an idea?
