VW health check - knocking sound
« on: 03 December 2010, 00:07 »
hi guys.

does anyone know what a health check covers?  my car has developed a knock on the front passanger side. happens when i turn to nearly full lock whilst driving. cv joint possibly? anything else it could be? havent checked because of the weather.  would VW look at it as part of a health check do you think?

im relatively new to mk2 ownership + fixing/replacing parts, as im learning as they develop, and want to work on the car myself as much as possible.

many thanks
cory

cv mate, use search function, check n see if boot is split, if it has you've lost all the grease n joint gone fubar.
also check suspension parts, bushes etc on that side

cheers bud, thats what i am suspecting.

ive changed
rear drums, breaks and bearing.
metal water pipe
radiator
sunroof etc

so as i say, im still fairly new to fixing/fitting. im guessing a new cv joint is gunna be around £20?
front brakes - both sides
wheel bearing, strut top, and now more than likely a cv joint to replace on passanger side.

looking at the haynes maunal, cv joint looks pretti simple to do.

would a garage press a bearing in cheaper if i just took the hub into the workshop? i figure if i have a wheelbearing to do
i may aswell do all the jobs as once. just need to get a ball joint splitter.

yep unless you have a press take the hub to a gararge. sometimes cvs can be a pain to get off so it may be worth taking the shaft as well. cant see them charging more than 30 quid to do both.
