Strange Steering Problem! - Heeelppp
« on: 02 December 2010, 13:57 »
Hey guys...I have a dodgy problem with my steering and i don't know what the hell it is.
I got the car lowered from standard 40mm yesterday, and the steering has improved a hell of a lot.. but the problem still persists. It seems that when i drive like 40mph at a roundabout and go around it...turning right its fine and feels planted to the floor.... then if i have to take a left turning, say at a 45 degree angle, not a sharp 90 turn, it feels like its going to slide or as if the wheel is going to fold under, and the steering goes a little loose. I also get a slight rumble when turning left or right, but very very minor.... When i got springs put on, i asked the mechanic to take a look and tried to explain to him, he got back to me saying that he cant find a problem and he thought it may of been the wishbones but said they look fairly new, and he doesn't know..but i cant be 100 percent sure that he checked it all over. ??? Any help would be great..

Yep the bolts are all done up... I only seem to notice it at speed round a corner, like 30+mph...and when i have to turn the wheel left a fair bit..It feels like the wheels kinda gonna fold up under itself.. if ya get me drift.

Track rod end  :undecided:

Did you get the wheels properly aligned after having the springs fitted?

If you reverse slowly while turning as if reverse parking does it do it? If so then it's likely to be track rod end or more likely tie bar. A slight play in either ball joint allows the wheel to judder when you turn. The wheel tries to go straight and so drags very slightly. New track rod ends are £15 new tie ends £25 . If I were u I would replace all of them in one go, as one faulty one will put strain on the others and they will fail quicker.

mine done something similar, turned out i'd whacked the arb on the a speedbump and pulled it out of the droplink.

sorted that and it's much better.

if its not that check the tyres are pumped up properly

Key mate, a mate had a similar problem.  Have you kerbed or clipped it slightly?  Check the position of both rear wheels and check the gab between the furthest rear point of the wheel to the mudflap arch if one looks more diff then you have a bent rear axle, something to rule out!

Optimists think the glass is half full. Pessimists think the glass is half empty. Realists know that someone will have to wash the glass.
