Welcome to another fellow Scot

Great choice of colour, mind you mine's been buried under a pile of the white stuff for a week now so I've almost forgotten she's black under there.

A lot of us have or are going to be fitting our rides with winter tyres so that we can at least get out and about in our beloved GTI's, what about you?

Gizzy, I'm hoping to drive from near Peebles to Glasgow tomorrow evening as I have a ticket for Scottish Opera.  I reckon that if there's no drifting or an exceptionally heavy fall, and there's no blockage due to jackknifed lorries or idiots in summer tyres in the ditch, I should be OK.

Car's filthy dirty though, I have to say.

Lucky you, I nearly got a ticket for the opera too  but decided against the journey, so very glad I gave it a miss.  Be safe and let us know how the winter tyres go.  Above all enjoy the Opera.

I'm going to be stuck in the Estate I live in for a while I think.  We've had 14 inches of snow on the flat parts and its worse where it's drifted.  The cul-de-sac doesn't get gritted either and there's also two uphill sections to negotiate.  There's currently two tyre tracks cut into the road where people have taken their 4x4's up but its now frozen pretty solid with a large lip in the middle.  Even once it starts melting I'm going to be stuck for a while as the lip will take the front end of the car off at these depths.

I had a small go on Saturday when we only had a couple of inches trying to move it out and got nowhere.  I'd put that down to the DSG (rather than the tyres) as I couldn't change it out of 1st so was just spinning at the slightest incline.  I had a manual Mk 5 GTI before this car and it was actually quite good in the snow (relatively speaking).  It had Dunlop tyres on the front and I see from other posts here the Bridgestones on the Mk6 could be the problem now rather than the DSG?  Although not being able to change up into 2nd is likely to be a problem I think.

It will be good to hear how you guys get on with the winter tyres.

I too am an ardent culture vulture but love to indulge, sometimes, in common vulgarity.

Scotsgolfer, there seems to be a way to play the DSG to cope with the snow - put it in drive and don't touch the accelerator.  It should creep forward, and as it does that, it should be possible to get it into second with the paddles.  I think.  I didn't really get the whole thing sussed last winter, and this year the winter tyres have (so far) meant I didn't have to try it.

Some say to switch off the ESP as well.

Your roads sound like a complete no-no though.

Rolfe.

re DSG and snow; is this coincidence?

We had snow here on Tuesday and i pulled away from home as i do normally .. BUT it normally takes me to the end of the lane for the car to shift in to 2nd.  With the snow, it shifted up in half the distance.

Coincidence or just some smartness somewhere?

Welcome Scotsgolfer.

Snow! what snow! very little down my way, DSG is coping admirably in the icy conditions. Thing is, planning to drive to Aberdeen tomorrow, so we shall see how that goes.
