Pump twice to Get a Brake Pedal???
« on: 10 February 2005, 19:22 »
Hi guys

Last week i blew the rear driver side brake pipe (the one before the flexi hose)

Since fixing this by replacing the pipe, the brakes are very spongy.

If you slam your foot down on the brake pedal it goes through the floor, same the second time. On the third press, however, something magical happens ; You get the brakes back!!!!!!!!!

Tried bleeding the brakes (all round) this has made it better than it was but still requires pumping.

Checked the valve that runs inline from the servo to the air flow bit at top of engine, you have to suck or blow - air only flows one way, so pretty sure thats OK.

Surely it could only be the servo or master cylinder? Would that mean the brakes wouldn't work at all tho?

By the way the car is a 87 golf mk2 gti k-jet.

Any help you can give would be much appreciated as I am almost going insane

did you press the brake pressure regulator lever while bleeding? this can be a bit stiff and may need a bit of work to get it moving easily but needs to be pushed back to get a good bleed!

There is probably air in one or both or the rear calipers, jack the back of the car up as high as you can get it. Make sure the brake compensator is wedged full open so you get a good flow of fluid from the bleed nipples. Bleed until there is no bubbles and a good pedal, don't let the master cylinder run dry.

I'm sure i've posted that somewhere before ages ago
Just to add to that, raise the car up on the rears, press the brake pedal 40 times or more, then leave it to settle for an hour. The theory is if you have jacked the rear up high enough then it should be the highest point in the system, so all the air should settle there.

Oh and when you pump the pedal do NOT press it all the way to the floor, you'll bugger the seals :)

Buy an 'eeze-bleed' from Halfords, it uses pressure from the spare tyre to bleed the system, makes the job dead easy
