Sunroof won't open
« on: 28 November 2010, 15:16 »
Hi guys,

Just brought myself a Jetta GTI.

Now its home I've have a good look round it and it looks like the sunroof is leaking. I can't open the sunroof though to have a proper look. The handle will rotate about 10deg and become solid. I don't want to try any harder incase I break it.

Is there any special way of opening it?

Here's a picture of it to keep this post a little intersting :)

Its cold you dont need it, wait until spring then have a go, becuase if idle Devil fingers get stuck and can't put things back, you are in trouble!
sounds like you need to check the gear mech sometimes they jump teeth and its on the maximium wound when its actually not hence half open.

No, don't need it, but when the ice melts during the day it is getting into the headlining and running down the windscreen. When it gets colder again its freezing the headlining, the inside of the windscreen and the seats where its dripped onto.

Will have a look at the gear mech. tomorrow. Will try ramps method too

take the handle and the surround off, then remove the sunroof winder block.  make sure the thing will turn freely, it has an inbuilt mechanism which locks after a certain number of turns, to prevent you winding roof too far. if its in the wrong position wind the block till its fully 'closed' then refit to roof and retry.  hope that makes sence!
