Mk2 power steering fluid
« on: 28 November 2010, 15:11 »
Sorry if this is an obvious question but is power steering fluid for a mk2 standard? I noticed today my P/S setup is making a right racket in the cold weather (was fine yesterday) and that the on checking the levels the fluid level is low. Belt tension is fine. I'll flush the system some when but as a temp measure I just want to top it up.

Halfords is closest and they do their own brand or 'Slick50' which is cheaper. Anyone know if these will do as I need to get some fluid tomorrow morning.

Thanks

Ah right, so it is specific then. The stuff in there at the moment is black

Not going to be able to see the colour without opening the container  :undecided:

This stuff? (CHF 11S)

Ok, now I'm really confused as I've just read several contradicting views that say I should be using red fluid?

Red is usually auto boxes but what I'm saying is what ever you had before is more than likely to be Green stuff?
I've ran 8V 16V both on green and had no issues at all!

I use plain old Comma CHF 11S

What I will say is to drain from the pump and resivor and try and get as much of the old stuff out before refilling.
You find that the pipes might have got bits of seals in it due to the fluid being so old!

Righto, cheers clipperjay

So it's the expensive £15 bottle from Halfrauds I need then?

Just been reading as I have a late mk2 with a red cap reservoir I need the ATF stuff (Dexron II) as apparently the green stuff will leak past the seals? Never thought there would be so much debate over P/S fluid

Well the book says ATF, I just checked with the Coma catlogue and mine (16V Square res) came up Green So As long as you drain the system well before you stick new stuff in?

Red cap = ATF Dex II
Green cap = CHF

Get it right, or it'll go wrong.

Only issue is that the reservoir/lid might not be original - so its totally hit and miss!

Also some Pumps are retro fitted!
Mines come off a Corrado and when I was inspecting the pump only green fluid came out of it hence the book said green on mine the pump had green in it and the only thing new was the lid which came off a red round. Guess I've used Green stuff instead  :undecided:
