BUT.....
...my previous car was a brand new Nissan Almera SXE (with regular tyres, 16") and this was better in the snow than my new baby, which cost £14k more.
Why after spending £27k haven't they fitted tyres which would help the new customer?

They have...they've fitted tyres with give good grip on fast open roads and tracks where journalists hoon them about, write good reports and make people like us want them.

There is no such thing as an all weather tyre.
If VW fitted winter tyres, you'd moan that they were shocking in summer, lacking in grip, and worn out after 5000 miles.

Sadly, the only true solution, is to have both summer and winter wheels/tyres.

You can spend £80k on a new Porsche and it'll be more crap in the snow that a £7k Fiat Panda.
These are just the way things are.

It's going to be such fun seeing non-winter tyre shod cars be they FWD, RWD or even 4WD with even wider tyres than the Golf negotiating their way through the snow/ice.

Size does matter!

I am an southern-expat, only moved up north 5/6 years ago. But I don't think this matters, as only the last 3/4 years have been bad (weather wise) regardless of where you are. Only 3/4 years ago, November was okay weather-wise, however the November's of the last 2/3 years have resulted in snow etc.
So much for global warming !

I'm buying another petrol engine !!!

Freezing in the Northern Hemisphere, boiling in the Southern.
Which is worse?
Best weather climate is in San Diego, California, US of A. You won't die from heat or cold there but from utter boredom.
