Winter Tyre Thread's........now I get it !
« on: 27 November 2010, 15:47 »
Just taken 'her' out for her maiden voyage in the snow and she sucks !
I guess, low profile tyres = less rubber = less tread = less grip, I may have to swap for winter tyres....

....any suggestions....?

Thanks

I think its moire to do with the winter tyres being able to operate at lower temperatures, not so much tread depth

Oh I see, then why didn't VW fit ones that will operate well in all conditions, after all we paid a handsome price for the whole package?

This now means that many owners will own 2 sets of tyres, which is a bit of a nuisance for me personally  :undecided:

Because there is no such thing.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

+1 and also because how do you define well? Some folks on here take their summer tyres to the extreme with track days and the like so standard summer tyres do not operate well enough. Other folks find they do operate well enough because they drive a bit more gently.

I've got Michelin PS3s and I find they cope well enough in the snow (crap on slush but good on virgin snow) for what I need them to do.

If we see some bad snow down here in the 'tropics of the south east' I shall just drive my wifes car about tbo. Shes got a newish corsa which has got 16" wheels, less power ( obviously ) and the car is also a manual which is probably easier to drive in snow.

Failing that I'll drive the Golf very gently indeed and try my best not to look like 'Bambi on iceskates' impression

The roads were all white here this morning, most people did not make it too work, even local people, i made it from 16miles away on the hills. People kept asking me how. I said magic tyres
Got home tonight and a foot and a half of snow in the back lane so will be interesting to see how they do on the way back out tomorrow. As coming into the street into the drive was quick so i did not sink

Roads here this morning were terrible as well, the car was actually bottoming out in the deep snow. I was worried I was going to rip the exhaust off
