Mk5 v Mk6
« on: 22 November 2010, 13:10 »
I'm thinking about changing from my nearly 4 year old Mk5 to a Mk6.

I'm very happy with my current car and am only thinking of changing because I want to go auto, otherwise I'd hang onto it as the Mk6 isn't different enough for me to think of changing.

My only real complaint about the Mk5 is the intermittent rattles and the noise at motorway speeds.

I wonder if anyone else who's made a similar change has noticed any improvement on either point with the Mk6.

Cheers.

Wait for the Mk7 personally.

You are right about the differences.I drove the mk6 a few times, and it has a nicer interia tbh and thats abit it. XDS is good aswell.Slighter better mpg by a couple of mpg.

Mk6 is more refined, less wind noise intrusion into the cabin... but on the downside, it has less in driver feel feedback
Rattles are normally loose screws behind the dashboard on the mk5, easy fix and not a finacial reason to sell up.

Mine is nearly 4 years old, and not a single rattle after 50k.

Mk7 should hopefully be a clean slate. And worth trading for, but thats just my oppinion from driving both.

You will find a Mk6 more refined and quieter on the motorway. There is no more wind noise from the mirrors for instance. Tyre noise is also more supressed. I am guessing that a DSG would be smoother still than a manual as well.

Many on here have changes up from the MarkV.

I had no rattles in my MarkV and have no rattles in my MarkVI although some have reported squeaks from the door seals.

I think you need some more reasons to justify the change though. The MarkV is still a very good car.

Mk6 GTi - returned to leasing company after 3 great years and replaced with :

Mk5 GTi - Edition 30 - Revo 1 and some tweaks - 310 bhp. Its a better car than the Mk6  - Now sold and replaced with :

Mk6 R - Rising Blue 5 Door. Won't be standard 270bhp for long

Family Car : Mercedes ML420 with 360 bhp
Looking at Porsche Macan as replacement

I traded my MK5 GTI for a MK6 and with the MK5 having the centre air vent which always rattled from new in certain temperatures etc.

I can say that the dash is better quality. The sound proofing is a lot better so there is less engine noise and the mirrors are quieter and apparently the glass and seals are better around the window to keep things quiet.

On the motorway it does make a difference and I find the car much better at 60 onwards.

On the rattle front on the MK6 I had a couple when it was brand new but disapeared after 1K when I am guessing the suspension etc started to loosen up.

The Mk5 is an aged Elizabeth Taylor. Badly made-up and full of frappe. The Mk6 is the young version of her. You get my gist.
