Notchy Gear Selector and Rough (as f**k) Idle.
« on: 08 February 2005, 21:42 »
My 90 16v has got a real sh1tty gear selection in 2nd and 4th - anyone else had this? I've read a few posts on here and most people say to replace the rods and fit a balance weight, but is that going to solve a problem for 2nd and 4th?
Also the idle on the old girl is rough as buggery. It'll bomb along no problem at all once the accelerator is depressed, but when it's stationary i fell like I'm sat in a washing machine on full spin!?!   I've read all sorts of posts about the ISV, so I might give that a try, if not what other route can I take.

Thanks

Lewy

not sure about the idle thing, maybe worn timing chain? don't know much about 16 valves!!

if your 2nd and 4th are notchy it could be worn synchromesh. its common on 2nd so if its bad it could effect 4th as well. how badly are your bushes worn?

The rough idle was down to an air leak after the metering head, the pipe was crushed and created an opening by the previous owner! Now that that has been fixed I've been given a different problem, once fired up and after the 'choke' period, the idle sits at about 1250rpm, but after a very slight flick of the throttle it sits back down to a 1000. It still does this even after a long run - anyone know how to solve it?

Also gtijoe, what bushes are likely to be kapoot!?!

possibly all of them!!! you can get a kit from greman and swedish for under a tenner, which contains all the bits you need, did it on mine and it transformed the feel of it but it may not cure the notchyness.
