Mk3 1.6 pipe missing on engine?
« on: 21 November 2010, 16:49 »
Hi im new here and my first car is a golf mk3 1.6 however it looks like there is a pipe missing from the engine?
Does anyone know what the part number is?
I’ve had a look on this forum and on Google but can’t find the part number but it defiantly looks like a pipe is missing. Any help would be great thanks.

Hi, you do have the pipe that feeds warm air into the airbox missing from the heatsheild at the front of the engine. Personally I wouldn't worry about it, all it does is duct some warmed up air from around the manifold to the airbox. I'm not too sure what the purpose of it is to be honest. I think in really really cold snowy/icey/foggy weather conditions you want slightly warmer drier air into the engine so somewhere that's frequently like that would need it. In the UK its seldomlyas bad as that. I don't have that pipe on my 1.4 and the one on my dads volvo is missing too.
If you undo the bolts that hold that thin metal shroud on you will also see that it has very little purpose.
See what other people think about it then make up your own mind, if it costs any more than a fiver I wouldn't even consider putting it back on...

Just noticed you can see where the other end has snapped off just below the dipstick in the photograph, that joins up with the shroud on the manifold.

Just a warm air feed, nothing major.

Warm air feed to the intake. You might want it on a very cold winter night/morning but 99% of the time you'll be fine without it.
Not low enough mk5
Not on the road enough mk3

Thanks for the replies good to know what it does and it’s not a problem. First car and all means I’m a little paranoid and don’t know much about cars so that doesn’t help matters  . Thanks again.
