Stuck starter motor bolt
« on: 20 November 2010, 12:49 »
Why is it the 'simple' jobs always give the most arse ache?

I tried to clean up the starter motor connections today to see if solved the hot start problem. The nut that holds the electrical leads to the starter motor is rather rusty. I tried to undo it but now the threaded shaft it sits on just goes round with the nut. I've soaked the nut in penetrating fluid but any ideas how to get it off? Not a lot of access there.

It undid a fair few turns and then just got stuck. So now the leads are loose and a connection can't be made.

cant you sort of lever a screwdriver or something behind it and try and wind the whole thing out?

Will the shaft just wind out completely then? Doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

Or try an cut the nut of somehow, I know its tight, But a hacksaw blade an just persevere with it,
And then you could pack the bolt up with some washers after and put new nut on 1st bit of the thread,,
No guts No glory,

Yeah I think I'm going to have to cut the damn thing off.

If I cut the nut off I should have 1-2 threads to nip a new nut up on the end. Lost the light now, will have to do it tomorrow. I hate cars

Can you get mole grips on the thread then use a spanner? Other wise I would cut the nut off if it doesn't budge?

Isn't that the truth mate!

I'm hoping so. Pliers did nothing and don't have any molegrips but hoping to blag some tomorrow. As the shaft turns to I'm concerned I've broken something inside the solenoid? It still starts fine though if I bridge the gap, just makes a few sparks

I'll get the grinder out tomorrow to cut it if not as you say.

If it starts you have not fubared it mate its just a long metal connector worst case stick a grub screw type of nut to hold the circular clips in place
